Nationalism

the "n" word is certainly on the rise ...but with nationalism comes other social ills: intolerance of minorities, scape goating of immigrants, rise in conservatism etc

it was the rise of nationalism that led to the rounding up of jews in pre-war germany

They say that in war time nationalism is stronger than ever. Nationalism is something very dangerous thing. It's a tool that can be used by leaders to get the people with them. If you convince the people that you country is better than everyone else's, it will soon lead to the idea that your people is better than everyone else's. Sure, people can be proud about their country, but if you don't watch out, there's nothing that stops another Third Reich, or another Belgian Congo.

nationalism is scary, we definatly dont need more conservatives :dozey: , and our intolerance of minorities (ethnically, sexually, etc) is already at a maximum among the people to whom nationalism most appleals.

but frankly, i dont give a shit ;)

It is true that after 9/11 the nationalism in the U.S. sky rocketed. I think it's this fact that's the primary factor in driving all nationilism up.

ya, it was the "in" thing to buy a flag, and say "**** osama" and rally behind a retarted president, now it is catching on (and worse, spreading to the people kids, nothing is worse to me than seeing some rich white 15 year old getting a boner for the american flag, and president bush) and will be rising as long as we are stuffing domocracy down the throat of the muslim world.

Not always. The Scottish National Party is not like that. It's one of those "bad words" that society creates.

Nationalism is patriotic fanboyism. Nuff said. I still don't get why people assign their loyalties based only boundaries that are purely political.

Because we live in a better country than you.

Just so people know its not just talking about nationalism in the U.S.

The past few weeks have brought examples of this powerful, if sometimes irrational, resurgence of nationalist sentiment. The Chinese seem to have gone off their rocker with the recent street protests against revisions of Japanese schoolbooks. The Chinese claim that the texts whitewash Japanese brutality against China during World War II. Maybe so, but what's striking are the chanting, unruly nationalist protesters in Chinese cities.

...

Then there's France, which is always secretly competing with the United States to see which country can be more high-handed in asserting its national interests. This year France may take the prize. After prodding other European nations for a generation toward its view of a unified Europe — and after former French president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing took the lead in writing a new European constitution — the French public is leaning against ratification of that constitution in a national referendum later this month.
