I was looking today, to see if there was anyway to increase the resolution of Dungeon Keeper in dosbox, when I stumbled upon this dev blog

This guy is attempting to remake the original Dungeon Keeper into a full 3D engine. I feel like supporting this guy, because I thought the original was better than the sequel. Currently the only place to play DK is XP or DosBox (game can't run in Vista)

If you feel like looking at his work, there are various screenshots, video. He's even got the alpha, where he has got all the rooms implmented into the engine. I believe he's working on the imp AI at the moment.

I LOVED Dungeon Keeper, one of my all time favourites, I agree with the original being the better of the 2 as well. I found a way to play Skirmish through cmdprmpt too, so endless hours! :D

Any pictures of this remake?

And who can forget the intro...!

Just work in progress pics I'm afraid, but to give you an idea of where this project is going, the original gameplay elements will be left untouched. However he will using shaders. An example beingfor the fortified walls

I was unimpressed by this picture, however you won't respect it till you download the file. It speaks for itself

Some work of the models (Hopefully they will be updated to look smug with the new shader system)

He's making a script convertot, to convert the original DK code into Lua

Looks good, so has he remade everything or has imported a lot from DK and just remade parts?

I think he's converted Dk core code, and developing everything else around it

Nice, I was actually reminded of this game a few days ago when rifling through some old PC mags. Damn, I used to play this over modem with a guy down the road.

So how's this going to work, anyway? Is DK abandonware, or will you need the original game for it to work? Might be some licensing issues otherwise, it's always a bummer to see projects like this hit the wall when something like that happens.

It's kinda abadonware, but EA might well object, i think they have the license since they bought Bullfrog.

Why do the videos show as no longer avaible to me?

He's so gonna get raped by EA when the project nears completion, I swear to God..

This won't fix the age old Bullfrog flawed game mechanics of only half a dozen twee, predictable, piss easy levels until the very last one which is set at IMPOSSIBLE. Or bugged so you can't finish the game.
Populous excluded, of course.

Well Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 are piss easy to beat so there goes your theory.

I've beaten the game twice.

Also, have you tried multiplayer.

Not directly related to the problem, but still some interesting information if you can find it

Rarely has any abandonware case gone to court. In November 2006 the Library of Congress approved an exemption to US copyright law that permit the cracking of copy protection on software no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder so that they can be archived and preserved without fear of ramification. It is still unlawful to distribute the old software and games, free or otherwise.

So its pretty much half a job done. We need to change the law so that all software that are not actively supported or sold by publishers or developers be released legally as a non-commercial freeware software

Well Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 are piss easy to beat so there goes your theory.

'IMPOSSIBLE' was an over exaggeration to demonstrate that all the levels apart from the last were piss easy, which is to say a dilution of 1000 parts piss to 1 part easy, as opposed to just easy.

This complex mathematical formula (endorsed by Stephen Hawking) also applies to other Bullfrog games, such as Syndicate / Syndicate Wars, Powermonger and Black & White. Steve in fact provided some of the voiceovers for these games.

Dungeon Keeper is no different, and I stand by my 'theory' that you can't polish a turd.

I stand by my theory that anyone who thinks Dungeon Keeper is a turd is stupid and completely wrong about whatever he says relating to the topic.

Well I suppose that's one step up from 'u r gay'. Good effort.

I will say this for it though, when I was in the studio at the time Dungeon Keeper was near completion it was a great looking game, especially as it was all built in 3D Studio 4...

Again wrong. Syndicate Wars is piss easy to finish but American Revolt the expansion thing is a complete and utter bitch.
