AS the title says.

Help me stop thinking of WoW. Its driving me mad. Part of me is glad i cant connect while being in Uni halls, but part of me hates it as i miss raiding every weekend and wednesdays, miss the guild etc.

Any other decent MMORPGs out there anyone can highly recommend? Im trying Guild Wars but i kind of dont see the point of it being online when you do everything by yourself :S

EQ2... since the combat changes, it plays a lot like wow, but I think the game goes mor indepth than wow does. The crafting system, guild system, and over all player experience is a bit more refined.

I too am trying to stay away from WoW ..I cant even buy BC because I havent reached lvl 60 in wow and I'm not rerolling a new character in BC ..but I'm itching to play a MMO and dont want to bother with the crappy titles out there

vanguard is coming out in a few weeks ..beta is kinda boring so far

dungeon runners is kinda cool ...it's currently in beta but if you've purchased Guild wars you can get in automatically

Lord the rings is in beta and there are some beta keys floating around (if you find any, I'd like one plz)...open beta for european gamers

EQ2 is fun...but its too much of a drag leveling. You can't really level at any decent pace on your own and if your on a pvp server you get wtfpwned by twinks all the time.

Stay with WOW, except dont do pve as its a waste of time. PVP is where its at. You get very good gear that doesn't take 10 hours a day of raiding to get, not to mention most of the pve gear blows for pvp anyways.

Weaklings, I gave up WoW two months ago and to compensate I've been playing other games, currently CoH. The point is, you can't stave off your MMO addiction with another MMO. You gotta go cold turkey. Play some FPS games, RTS, Singleplayer RPGs.

actually I'm trying to get rid of a fps addiction by playing mmos

Oh which FPS game?

umm all of them? ;)

got tired of fps after playing them exclusively for 4-5 years ..the recent dumbing down/consolification of the fps has left me with a sour taste in my mouth so I needed a break ...just started playing HL2 EP1 last night after not having touched it since jun 2006 ..enjoyable but more of the same

I say, go for EQ2. It's a lot deeper than World of Warcraft. This man measured the landmass of Azeroth.

"Richard Bartle, in his virtual worlds book, reports that somebody calculated that Everquest's continent of Norrath was about the size of Singapore. That's 700 square kilometres, much larger than WOW or GW."

That, and IMO, the graphics, lore, and world are a ton better.

ugh, the graphics in eq are better? define "better" ..it's a virtual wasteland of endless lanscpaes dotted with a few trees here and there ..dont mistake simplicity of design with being untalented ..the art direction in WoW is head and shoulders above any MMO out there despite the fact that it's low res etc

Yaus!

I don't recall anything ever being that bland. EQ2 looks believable, yet like fantasy at the same time. If you define EQ2 as a wasteland, then every MMO is.

The art direction in WoW is one of the largest reasons I stopped playing it.

Example.

A good fight becomes a fireworks display as hulking behemoths, wearing lavish armor that defys reality, jump around each other casting spells.

But still, to each their own.

yes technological limits necessitate that mmo's have somewhat featureless back drops ..however it's the incongruity of it all: there is no cohesiveness to the landscape. In some areas it just looks like some enviromental details have just been dropped in just to break up the monotony of the landscape ..whereas WoW seems to be designed as a whole rather than individual parts

that's more gameplay than art direction ..and I dont see how anyone can complain about the lack of reality in a game that features elves, orcs, trolls and gnomes

I could recommend Dark Age of Camelot. Thats the only other MMO I've played besides WoW. Just be prepared for unbalanced PvP. You might be better off just playing another RPG that isn't an MMO.

I'd recommend EQ2 for now, then PotBS in June (or earlier for open beta).

Gunz the duel, international edition since you're in the UK. It's more like an MMOTPS (third person shooter)

Hah just tried the EQ2 trial. Well, actually i downloaded it, tried to get updates from Sony and i couldnt connect. Im guessing it's, again, a case of blocked ports (dont come to Uni Of Gloucestershire if you want to play MMORPGs lol)

Thank god Steam works haha.

Holy crap, an MMO post without mentioning Conan? Someone give this man a ****ing medal! :E

LOL, j/k man. <3

Personally I'm waiting to see if Vanguard is any good, otherwise nothing has my interest at the moment. It seems like a mixed bag though, whereas everything I've heard about it sounds awesome - deep classes, meaningful combat, huge open-ended world (WoW is so ****ing linear when it comes down to it), player housing, intricate crafting, diplomacy system, etc etc etc etc. But... idunno, it looks a little boring. And reports from people in beta aren't all good either. But on the other hand I've heard great things from other people in beta, so I'm hoping it's a case of having the right mindset to get enjoyment out of it. Anyway, not too long until reviews start rolling out now, released at the end of the month.

LOTR, I hear is craptacular. But that was only one person's opinion... looks like a total WoW clone from the trailers to me.

PLANETSIDE.

(If you've got a good connection)

That said, if you want something that will last forever, this might not be your thing; it's essentially a vast, pointless war. Like B2042, but with hundreds of players at once.

If you don't know what it is, it's a MMOFPS. Massively-Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter. And Sony Online Entertainment is hosting a Planetside Reserves thingymabob until March 31st where you can try out the whole game (Up to Battle Rank 6, i.e. only about 12 Cert points or something are avaliable at all) for free!

It's pretty cool. If I can get gamecards here, I'm getting one for the next 3 months.

I thought Vanguard was pretty much EQ2?

I wouldn't mind trying Vanguard but I dunno, it doesn't look any better than EQ2. Nothing new?

More like it's what EQ2 should have been - the spiritual succesor to the first. Atleast that's what I hear, haven't played EQ or EQ2, or Vanguard for that matter. *shrug*

Vanguard = corpse runs and long grinds. Basically, EQ2 for the more hardcore MMO players.
