Need Books for Research

I need recommendations for books with either, or hopefully both, of the following characteristics for a research project at college:

• An elderly person who is alone and depressed.
• Someone who is pulled out of their depression by a new friendship.

I realised as I was writing this it sounds a lot like Up. Not a book, unfortunately.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, The Old Man and the Sea is a must read, and I'd say it fits the requirements enough, though I don't know what the deal is with your project.
