If you ever have a question about what a specific entity does, simply open the properties box of that entity and click on the help button. Easy enough right? They usually contain good information like:

Sets the color and angle of the light from the sun and sky.

An invisible lightsource.

True these are not end all answers to your most desperate of questions, but they do give you a good direction to go in.
