Need Help ASAP...plz

I have been playing half life since the very first one, I remember getting it the day it came out and playing TFC. Neways- I recently had to get a new hard drive and cant find my HL2 cd key.

I have an account with Steam, and have read that I shouldnt need my cd key since I have my account saved.
I downloaded steam/my account worked/and I downloaded all my games back. But when I try and play CSS I get a hl2 generated errors msg.

I have my hl2 cd + box sitting infront of me, but im afraid to reinstall HL2 cause it might ask me for my cd key, which i thought was sposed to be saved on Steam?

Just install HL2 using Steam. Right click on the game and click "Install Game". It won't ask you for your CD key.

all source games are run through hl2.exe so you dont need hl2 installed. what is the error exactly?

I already downloaded and installed the games, when i go to click on HL2 and CSS niether work.

I get the error msg: Hl2.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
