In HL2, CS:S, and DoD:S, I keep on typing the following commands in the console:

fps_max 60
cl_ragdoll_collide 1

The settings stay during the time I play, but when I quit and go back to the game, both these settings are back to their default values. I have also tried editing the .cfg files, but they are always replaced when I quit the game. Any idea on how I can fix this?

Also, I have a graphics problem where the dust from bullets hitting walls and objects is always the same size on my screen. For example, in DoD:S if I shoot at the ground in the distance, the dust that shoots up from the ground looks REALLY huge (because it's the same size on the screen as it would be if I shot the ground right next to me).

Any help is much appreciated.

Set them in your config then set your config to Read Only, as this prevents the games from over-writing your configs.

A while ago I got told to set the fps_max to 61 instead of 60 if you're doing it like that. There is apparently a smoother ride if you use 61 (something to do with the rate at which the frames are rendered is uneven if set to 60, so there's one frame which will be rendered with a slight pause or something)

Just a tip. I haven't really tried 60 so I can't say if I notice a difference.

Hmm, I'll try that. I have a hard time noticing such small differences, though. I just read on some tweak guide that you should put the max at your screen's refresh rate. Anyone else know if I should have it at 60 or 61 fps for a 60 Mhz screen?

I'd imagine that you won't notice much of a difference by upping the max_fps by 1 :p
