So I was switching my network connection from wireless to wired and something strange happened.

I started by disabling my wireless connection under "Network Connections", than after doing that I enabled my wired connection but the box that says it's enabling the connection froze. I waited a few seconds and it eventually disappeared, except now my wired internet connection was gone from my network connections, leaving only my wireless.

it now looks like this

I tried uninstalling the my wired net adapter and restarting windows but that didn't do anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps try reinstalling the network?

Start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs-->Add/Remove Windows Componets
(Tab is on the left side of screen)

Might also try uninstalling/removing any/all network software/hardware (Of course remove hardware while the PC is off) & then shut down, wait 30 seconds & then turn PC back on. Allow windows to fully boot up & then turn PC off & try once again by reinstalling everything.

I've already tried uninstalling my wired net adapter and restarting. When my computer gets back to windows it says new hardware found and that it's the net adapter but when I go to my network connections, it's still not there.

Backup the files you want & then simply reinstall Windows. As you know, this is a fast & easy way to fix 99% of any problem you come across. If you can't fix a problem within a set period of time, you're then wasteing time. It would be faster (& better overall) to start fresh. Then at your convience figure out what went wrong, while at the same time, being up & running. Often times you'll find the cause of your problems & then be "Doh!" It wouldn't be the first time that a Windows PC end user had a problem with an obscure file somewhere which would then take forever & a day to diagnose. If after a clean installation of Windows was installed & all drivers updated, & you STILL had issues then that would indicate a bigger problem. Even possibly hardware related.

Do you have a basic PnP network card you can try? Perhaps your problem is hardware related.

Check the TCP/IP properties in the properties of the device and ensure that the IP and DNS settings are set to 'get automatically'. Are you using the Vista wireless utility? Make sure you disable and 3rd party ones they all suck. Does your router get detected in the wireless networks discovered? DCHP turned on your router?

edit: Also try going into system/ device manager and browsing for your ethernet adapter, you may need to 'enable' it through there.
