this might sound like a stupid question but how do i play half life 2 in offline mode. at the moment i have to be online to play it?

Half-Life 2 first needs a connection to the internet to "verify" the files through Steam, to check if they aren't corrupt so your computer won't crash or something 
After verifying the files, you can play Half-Life 2 in offline mode by starting up Steam without being connected to the internet. A window will then pop up asking to restart Steam OR start Steam in offline mode. After doing this you should be able to play HL2 in offline mode.
