Hi guys,

I'm hoping this forum will be active enough to get an answer. I need help with Vortigaunt names. I've tried to look for a reference for how Vorigaunts are named and I can't for the life of me find anything.

Just to start getting the word out, I'm working with a production company (s e f) video on a Half-Life fan film about the seven hour war. I have a team of highly talented production staff prepared to execute this huge project. The only problem is I'm stuck in writing, and I don't want to just toss a name at the character knowing people are going to be screaming at us.

Thank you for all your help.

The only time I remember (offhand) a vortigaunt having a name was Uriah in Episode 2, and even that was a nickname given by Magnusson (named from a Charles Dickens book). I'd take a similar route, really, and give the Vortigaunt some kind of nickname. There's nothing to suggest that they a) even have names, or b) have names we can pronounce.

What Yorik said. I'd say give your character some sort of human name, possibly another literary character. It's the only precedent.

Edit: Actually, in Half-Life: Decay: Xen Attacks, which is of ambiguous canon to be honest, you play two Vortigaunts named R-4913 and X-8973. Seeing as the Vortigaunts were all slaves at this point this can probably just be taken as some sort of serial designation and not actual names. They would probably ditch such labels as soon as gaining freedom. And that's if the whole thing can even be taken as canon.

Sounds great guys. Thank you so much! I'll be giving him a nickname. I can't wait to post more news here. Finishing up the script now and I have my team already moving on the next step.
