Need help with comp

Im having trouble with my computer. Its fairly new, but every time i try to play any high graphics game, it will get extremely laggy and jerky. ive defragged my hard drive and closed any extra programs. Any advice?
P.S. Please dont say something like "get a new computer," its not happening, i dont have the money.

what kind of processor and video card do you have? how much RAM? what type of RAM? What resolution? What settings?

I had the same thing...had something to do with the direct3d settings...don't remember what, though...

Half-Life runs like poop on D3D for me.
