Need Help with the Strider/Missile Silo MEGA-FIGHT

Oh my god... this is so insanely awesomely amazing, yet REALLY REALLY tough at the same time. In the missile silo defense against Striders mission, I've killed about 5 Striders so far and am now just constantly getting killed by those stupid little Hunters. Also the past few times I've tried throwing the Magnusson device it looks as if its hitting the Strider right on the body but then bouncing off. It's driving me NUTS!!!

So do you guys have any tips on beating this dang mission? And yes, I know its much longer... sigh... love the concept though, awesome action.

Yeah, Half-Life just ROCKS:cool:

Magnussons don't work on Hunters. Try running them over with the car, using the alt-fire on the Ar2, and launching the wooden logs at them with the grav gun after they shoot a few flechettes into it.

Car and gravity gun are the best way to take down Hunters. Also, never pick up a Magnusson when there're Hunters around, they'll just blow it up.

Actually they sort of do - in my tests (GMod) they take out about half the Hunter's health, stun it for a second, and make cool electric zappy things. Bit of a waste though.

lol how are you playing and posting in the forums?

And yeah, awesome mission. Very intense.

Dude I know how you feel, after launching the m.device and switching to the shotgun and 1-hit ko-ing it is so cool.

Just do what I do, put 5 M.devices on the floor (scattered slightly apart) and camp at the silo. The most amount of striders coming to you that way is 2, and you wont get lost in the middle of the forest

Um, I'm not using the Magnusson's on the Hunters at all. I know those are only for the Striders. Its just that those dang Hunters dont stop. I run over them with the car when I can, but usually they're on the side of the road and out of the way it seems. How do you use the Gravity Gun on them? Does it stun them? I'll have to try that...

I think I'm gonna attack the Striders better. For some reason I've been getting fairly close then just trying to launch it from a decent distance. Wouldn't it work a lot better if I just got right underneath them and launched it straight up? Seems to make sense to me, I'm gonna try that later tonight.

And also, I took a break from playing to post here, def wasnt doing both at the same time LOL. That'd be a feat for sure

awesome mission, heres my five top tips:

  • Make sure to stay out of the buildings which are about to be shot by the Striders laser, thats just bad news...
  • Make sure to visit the safehouses for health and ammo everytime there is a pause in the action, or you feel it is vital
  • Use your shotgun to destroy the magnussons, they have a large range of fire and almost always hit their target
  • Take out the hunters first, or always make sure to distract them as they will knock your hunters out of your gravity gun field, or destroy them as they fly
  • If magnussons far away try using your rocket launcher, it might not have enough to destroy a strider, but with a little help from rebels, you'll do fine

Enjoy, and Good luck

OMFG I am THIS freakin close to activating God mode or something just to complete this mission! I am pulling my hair out trying to kill those hunters while stinking a mag ball on those damn striders! It's insanely hard. I am at the last wave of striders, and it seems to be too many of them. There are at LEAST 4 more to kill and it just seems overwhelming at this point.

I'll try running down the Hunters some more but I dunno man :(

I turned on God mode for that mission after the first time I tried it without.

I'm not too insanely interested in the gameplay as I am the story.

FOR HUNTERS:
Use the rocket launcher
Use the secondary fire on the Ar2
Use the secondary fire on the shotgun
Use the gravity gun with logs
Use the car

Camp at the closest safehouse to the bunker.

This is how I do it, and it does well for me on Hard difficulty so it should work for you if executed right.

When the final wave is advancing, stick a Magnusson in the back of the car and race to where they're heading from. Just speed up to a unit (unit here being two Hunters and a Strider) and see if you can knock down the Hunters as you pass. If you didn't manage, get out and approach FROM BEHIND so the Strider can't mow you down. You should be a fair distance so try and get in some shots against the Hunters with the crossbow or magnum if you have spare ammo. If you have some rocket launcer ammo, even better, they wipe the floor with Hunters (plus, a supply shed near the base respawns rocket launcher ammo, so don't worry about using it). If they get close, whip out the shotgun and circle strafe whilst right clicking to double shotgun blast those suckers. With the Hunters taken care of in the unit you're attacking, drive up close behind the Strider and plant the Magnusson. With it facing the other way and with no Hunters to protect it, this should be a piece of cake. See if you can do this to two units before they reach the base, but as soon as the alarm sounds head down there ASAP.

When defending the base, the rocker launcher is you friend, but DO NOT use it against the Stiders. Waste of ammo considering the Magnusson device. Use it against the Hunters and pick up ammo from the supply shed to the West and dead rebels. If you run out and there's still Hunters, throw EVERYTHING YOU HAVE at them, since it's the last battle and you needn't worry about running out. Once the area is clear of Hunters, calm yourself. The Striders need to get real close to the base and then initiate their killer blow to fail the level so you have a fair bit of time blow them the hell up. Quicksave now. Approach the Striders from behind if you can, and don't rush your shot. Also, don't stand next to one dispenser waiting for a Magnusson to be stocked. Near the base there are dispensers within sprinting distance of each other so make sure you can access another quickly.

If you're fast and your mouse sensitivity's right, you should finish it with no hassle. Good luck =D

I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!````:bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

Somehow I managed to run down the last bunch of Hunters with the G-ride. Killed a strider approaching from a fair distance, then launched and killed the remaining three right as they EXTREMELY close to the base! Got em on the first try too! WoooHooo! Man, that was intense!!! I hate to even imagine how ridiculous it is on Hard difficulty!

Sad ending though :(

On a side note, I never played the original Half-Life before, and I've yet to play Portal. Which one should I move onto next? HL1? Portal? Or Team Fortress 2? Does TF2 contain a single player campaign?

TF2 is only a multiplayer game. Play HL1 first, then try Portal.

don't use the shotgun, use the pistol. It's insanely accurate and has a very large supply of ammo. (Because using it past the first levels is asinine)

If you really want to understand and get absorbed in the whole HL story, go way back to HL1 released in 1999 then Halflife Blue Shift. The graphics arent great, but still good game play. If you want to skip that, just go with the HL2 saga (released in 2004) and play through HL2 (about 20 hours of gameplay), on to episode Episode 1, then Episode 2. There are some good battles in those as well, but nothing like the Strider battle in EP2. There is also some great reading story line info here: http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/

Happy shooting!

He's playing Ep2... and he hasn't even played HL2, let alone HL...

/facepalm

It's pretty hard I completed it the first time, but the second time i almost lost.

This battle is so epic, but it gets so annoying, when I get far enough that the end is in sight, they get too close to the silos, and you should know the story from there.ARGH:sniper: I wish the crossbow worked on the hunters!

They do. I was able to take down a hunter with I think five bolts.

Use your crowbar, and while doing so shout,"LEEEEERROOOOOYYYYYYYY JEEEEEEEENNNNNKKKKIIIIIIIINNNNNSSS!!"

Oh, and to pull off Leeroy Jenkins right you have to die. D:

I hear you can also punch the hunters. Take 'em down with your bare hands!!

Na, I'd rather use my AR3 to kill the hunters

What if I bunker down in that little shack near the silo and just wait for the Striders to come to me?

You would have to be super fast disposing of Hunters so they don't destroy the MD's before you can blow the Striders up, which would be already very close to the silo. Sounds difficult and I personally wouldn't do it (I prefer a different approach) but you can try and then tell us how it went.

Yeah I'll try in. With god mode on and the ammo refill on. That should make the hunters a bit easyer. btw I have beaten the Strider maga battle without codes.
I beat all my games once then I use codes.

*edit*
Hey how many md's can you have out at once? If I can stock up a bunch I could stand a better chance.

Oh, I thought you would try it the standard way, without using the console.
Using cheats shouldn't be tough at all and, IMHO, takes all the fun away, specially in this interesting scenario you describe, but to each his own. Good luck defending that silo :)

As for how many MD's you can stock, I have no idea, never tried to stock'em, the most I've had is one in the car and one in the GG.

Probably would work, but the problem is the rebels concentrate on taking down striders with their RPGs rather than the Hunters (which would make launching M. a lot easier)

I've never lost a battle, what happens?

does the screen fade to black, or do you see the strider using its cannon against the silo, or possible Magnusson wailing in shear terror!?

Well I was triumphant in my tactic. It works pretty welll if you don't mind the siren going off the hole time.

Start by takeing Magnusson's out of transporters and stalking them near the closest transporter near the silo and the shack on the east side of the map near the silo. Then to make taking out Hunters a bit easyer I sugjest collecting logs and puting them near the east shack. Then go to the sawmill let the guy do his shpeel after the P.A. say's the Striders are on there way haul ass back to the east shack and wait for the Striders to come. The area your in is a really good choke point. All of the Striders have to come in range of your grav-gun.

Cool it worked. Since every time I play that part I try to save every single building it seems improbable that I'll be trying your strategy any time soon.

Cheers.

I've never lost a battle, what happens?

I lost it on purpose once, the Strider fires its cannon at the silo and as it hits the screen fades to black and says something about mission critical objectives or something

But the building and people die. Not a very clever strategy. By the time they'd blown up all my buldings I was forced back and was doing what you were doing.

.....huh? your not sounding right. I don't care about the NPC's and you were "forced back to what I was doing"? WTF does that mean!? My tactic is for lazy ass (like my self) who don't want to go running around the map and want to bunker down.

until you explain yourself you fail.

Actually, you just wrote that YOU fail.
But sure, if it'll make you feel any better, we'll act like he fails.
Hey Druckles, it seems you fail.

Ok, I shall attempt to explain myself clearly...

I feel for my NPCs counterparts... sorry, friends.

Therefore, I do not like to leave them to a grizzly fate. (Don't want them to die)

So I attempt to keep them alive.

But I play on "Hard" mode.

This meant that the first time I played it, not used to the scenario, the buildings got destroyed (I sucked).

So I was forced back to a situation from which I could defend properly (I retreated).

I then took up the strategy that you had where I piled Magnusson devices.

Actually, you just wrote that YOU fail.
But sure, if it'll make you feel any better, we'll act like he fails.
Hey Druckles, it seems you fail.

Oh no! So I do :O

Ok thats better. Druckles you no longer fail. But I care nothing for my npc counter parts. They stoped me repeatedly for gettin the think fast achievement by killing the elite that was firing cores at me. And in general they get in the way. The only NPC I care for is Alyx.

make sure you set difficulty on easy which actually will help a lot. I've beat it on hard with gravity gun and m.device and a little help from my car. Just gotta learn how to get to the points where striders are coming from which makes it easier in the begining so you dont have to fight 4-5 Hunters and 2 striders at a time when camping at base. Then towards the ending when Striders are coming from everywhere go to the closest point and kill the hunters and strider, then i believe you only have 2 striders left to kill and few hunters. Then get back to silo as quick as possible and line up as many m.devices as you can before you see striders coming. make sure to resupply on ammo and health and you will be just fine.

I got so frustrated on this mission, Took me awhile considering I saved it right when 3 of them were near the silo. I had to be so quick, finaly did it after I took a break. I hope there isn't a mission like this in Episode 3.

this mission was awesome and not so hard if you actually follow instructions given by magnusson. The main thing to remember is that hunters try to disable the magnussen device whenever they see it. they can disable it while your holding it and also when its attached to a strider. so take care of the hunters first. use .357 or pulse rifle, or throw wooden stuff at them after they fletch it, or just simply run over them with your car. once you clear the hunters, the strider becomes easy prey. safe often!
