Ok, so I am trying to run this on an older system but it should still be able to do it. Anyway it consists of this:

P4 2.4gHz
1 gig ram
320 gig HD
geforce fx 5600 Ultra (128mb)
sound blaster audigy se

when I try and run the game Steam tells me that my video driver is outdated and to update it, but it doesn't tell me which one to update to. I have the newest drivers for it (I just built this system two days ago with mostly spare parts and a fresh windows install). I have the option of continuing anyway, but the game will get to the fuzzy pic (the loading screen) then crash. Does anyone have any idea of what's going on?

so you have updated the drivers. did you get rid of your previous drivers before installing the new ones

dont do everything steam says. i recommend you roll back your driver in device manager. if the driver is having a problem with a game then you can update to the latest, but when its not effecting anything just leave it. steam only says that because your driver installed isnt the latest. the latest driver wont always be the best.

my brother has that card in his computer ( or used to ) its only a dx8 card and half life 2s menu screen is a 3d render and it might be trying to render in dx9 (by default) and that could the cause the crash. im no expert so im not sure if this is a possibility or not.. .but Iv heard stranger things. you will need to find the autoexec.cfg file and add what ever the line is to tell it to run in dx8, you can also do this by right clicking half life 2 in the steam games menu> properties and under the "General" tab click "Launch Options" you can type it in there, however im not sure if this is permanent or not, but good for a one time test . If this is the case I believe you need to enter this :

mat_dxlevel 80

but i could be wrong, as a matter of fact im almost certain im wrong... but i dont think it coud hurt to try ( the default is mat_dxlevel 90 )
