Possible Noob Question

I just recently got a new laptop with a DVD/RW
Now when i put a DVDR in my drive the computer cannot detect it
I also cannot copy files to the dvd by dragging them to the D drive
Am I missing something - a file, driver?
And is it possible to put music files on a dvd?

Both data and music along with video any any other type of file can be burned to DVD. Make sure your computer has a DVD burning application installed and some kind of program that allows you to drag files onto the D drive like another hard drive. A recent BENQ drive I installed needed a program called INcd to enable this function (the program came with the drive). Also are you using a DVD-R or a DVD+R. If your burner does not support either you must only buy the supported kind or it will not work. You could be using DVD-RAM but I doubt it.

You should have had some sort of CD writing software with the laptop.
Nero burning rom seems to be pretty popular, and its what I use.
You can download a free trial, just google the name "nero burning rom".
If you have a DVD RW you should be able to use DVD -R & DVD +R or DVD Rewritable discs.
You need to find out what speeds your dvd rw supports.
Most new drives are 16X, but most discs are 2-8x, dependant on where you purchase them.
Its unlikely you'll be able to use DVD Ram discs since these are essentially cartridges, and are not really discs as such.
If you have use 4 x discs, of either dvd-r or dvd+r, espect to burn a whole dvd (upto 4.7gb, if your lucky) in about 20 minutes or so.
Dependant also upon your system ram and cpu speed.

Thanks guys
I assume the Drive is DVDRw - says so on the door and the computer had sonic preinstalled but its useless
Are there any good free dvd burning software on the web?

i think windows XP has an option, ifu right click ur DVDRW drive, to format it. then you can drag and drop into it.
Nero and Roxio and im sure other burning applications allow you to format the DVD-R/W so you can use windows explorer to drag and drop.
you can get a version of Nero Burning Rom 6 for less than £5 (if ur UK) from www.overclockers.co.uk
