Hey guys... for those of you who have been commander, please, post all your tips and maybe we can add it to the Squad sticky thread.

I picked commander for a few matches on a public server... cause noone on our team was being it. A real crash course in learning, but I think I was getting the hang of it. However, i'm sure I can vastly improve. One thing I know I need to communicate more, with more clear instructions. Its hard clicking around on different squads constantly, giving new orders... especially the smaller squads with just like one guy. But I try to keep everybody with a goal. The big teams, like the ones Ennui were leading... are easy, and I always have them going somewhere.

Great job leading your squad, by the way Ennui :) (I still don't know how to pronounce your name) ;(

Heh, I was playing in that game, by the name "dOOd".

But I thought you were doing fine, I didn't notice a lot of artillery though, you can use that more often.

You were doing an awesome job, before you cowardly left. I mean, we won by 200 points.

People who join one squad are irritating as hell, try and get them grouped together by yelling at them in n3rd voices. Just always give supply drops whenever a squad asks for them... the grunts gotta do their job you just have to help them in whatever way possible. Other than that, just order people to waypoints as well as you can... give them whatever heads up via UAV or scan that you can.

You were doing pretty good I thought.

The thing is to constantly scan and to anticipate attacks instead of sending your guys once the flag is capped. There were a lot of squads today so that might have been difficult to handle. I find commander mode to be extremely fun, as it's like an RTS with the added strategic challenge of people deciding wether or not to accept your orders. It's like a realistic version of Command & Conquer.

Btw: I pronounce it N-oo-ee. Not sure if it's right at all :P

I'm sure I'm not the best at commander but I'm better than some. I definitely make sure to keep in commander view the entire time because there's plenty to keep you occupied.

If your assets get destroyed just drop a supply box next to them. They'll repair completely.

If I remember correctly from playing with Ennui it's pronounced On-Way.

Heh. I wasn't doing artillery barrages that much in some of the games, cause there were no large pockets of enemy anywhere. I should have bombed the carrier more often. That usually results in a nice amount of kills. But kills aren't what i'm after... its ensuring the safety of the flags.

yer gonna have to tell me in game one of these days... some people I horribly mispronounce their nicknames.

Well if it's the french word it oughta be prounouced On-we.

En-u-ah is how I pronounce it.

Commander tips...hmm...don't artillery your own guys ;-)
Seriously though, there's not much a commander can do but do art/uav/supplies when needed.

Although, honestly, if I see a commander sprinting across the map with other squads, I feel a big morale boost and I'm compelled to follow the bastard and ensure his victory!

*It may sound awfully obvious, but make sure you command all of your squads, not just the one you happen to be on at that moment. I have often been guilty of telling a squad to attack a base and wondering why all my other units are doing differenet things.

*If you are going to be a Commander, prepare for a round of not fighting. If I ever see the Commander fighting, I will Mutineer on principle. Ideally, you need to find a good hiding place at your main spawn point and stay there the whole game. For the US, I reccomend the boat bay, no enemies ever go there. For the MEC, go prone on the first line of sandbags facing the desert behind the helicopter.... confused? So am I.

*If you find all of your troops attacking different targets, perform a UAV where you want them to attach, even if you know how many enemies there are there. This will tell all your troops that this is where you want to attack and they will invariably co operate.

*Make sure you keep all of your apparatus in constant repair. Ideally, you should make sure that someone is always on-hand to defend things; they will get just as much action if the opposition realises you are a good commander ;)

*Give orders via the Team speak, not just through squad leaders. Also offer words of support and crack a few jokes. If your troops feel comfortable with you and find you a good person, they are more likely to co-operate.

*If one person in particular does something good for the team, for example blow up the enemies artillery, and you see him do it, mention it. Give him a congratulations. They will feel appreciated and less likely to partake in the round's standard mutineer ;)

That's all I've got for now... they aren't pieces of expert advice, but good for people just starting out.

First comment, as I said previously, commanders make for awesome morale boosts if he's on the field itself. It's really not that difficult to stay in the rear of your army and command from there, stopping every couple seconds to do services.

Second comment, I thought that too, but then I kept getting killed because the carrier it utterly undefended against enemy boats. My favorite hiding place is just to jump off the carrier and into the water, commanding from the opposite side of the carrier while taking a dip.

Although, staying on the carrier is a must for commanders, particularly being Assault class. You can individually take out any enemies that try and board the ship or take out the UAV, since no one else is patient enough to wait there and defend.

You bet :p It was my first game with some HL2 guys too. :imu:

I pronouce it:

En (as in "yen," Japanese currency) oo (like "moo").

'twas fun :D

too bad the bastard server banned me for team killing (of which I thought I only killed like 1 guy)

:dozey: If you're gonna be a commander, be sure you find a well hidden camp spot. Otherwise if you're a truly good player, you'd be able to fight in action and give out orders etc etc. Umm, you have to have squads to order around, because if you're team is runnin' a muck, you're effin' disorganized as hell, and nobody will know where the focus is needed at each flag base. Basically the whole match you're going to be looking in your little commander mode thingy. You have to constantly do scans, UAV's, give out supplies when needed, order sqauds around, and give out artillery support when requested or when you think you really need to. Basically just be aware of what's going on, that's all it is.

is being commander in bf2 like being commander in natural selection?

Something like it, you tell people where to go and what to do, but it's up to them whether they want to go there or not. You can't build stuff either.
