I'm looking for some new sound in my musical tastes. I just wonder what bands you all listen to and why you listen to them. I've been listening to a lot of Muse and that sort of music; But now, I'm looking for something hip hop that doesn't sound like shit (see* most mainstream hip hop). But don't limit it to hip hop. I'm just looking for some good bands.

Stick with Muse. Muse are Goddamn good, and I'm sure Shift will say the same. You could try listening to some Eminem. I don't really listen to any hip-hop but Eminem is probably the best hip-hop/rap music that I would listen to if I wanted.

for hip hop you could start out with Wu Tang Clan and take it from there..

i'll link you to "Beneath the Surface" GZA from Wu Tang Clan(My fav member) feat. Killah Priest from Sunz of Man

or some more deeper social-conscious artists such as Mos Def, talib kweli, common etc etc.. I recommend their older stuff here's a song called respiration that has all 3 artist in one song

as far as abstract goes Aesop rock is the obvious to start with, heres "Oxygen"

theres more hip hop shit, just so many artist to look into it's crazy. hope these will help you to get you started.

These are all very good. So much better than most mainstream stuff. Don't limit it to Hip Hop though. Anything that sounds awesome post. I'm already into NIN, Muse, Radiohead, Atmosphere, and various others.

Get the Richard D. James album by Aphex Twin.

I found lots of cool stuff on these sites. Very diverse in what they offer:

www.rateyourmusic.com <-especially check out the top 100 charts of each year
www.metacritic.com <-kind of esoteric criticism, but it also has familiar user-based rankings

I'd recommend rateyourmusic the most, because that way I it definitely broadened my horizons. For example, I used to consider metal as "noise," but then I listened to Moonsorrow and it was so much more than just heavy guitars and headbanging meatheads. I also found BT and The Field, which is like a polar opposite of metal and is very relaxing, profound music.

Also www.pandora.com is a must if you wanna search stuff within your own tastes.

Thee More Shadows. Play '2AM'.

How about some Battles?

nerrr

And, bizarely, I'm From Barcelona.

woo

I'm going to presume you know all about early 90s west coast and also about Immortal Technique.

I love Boards.
But not waterboards.

Kudos for picking my two favorite Battles songs as the ones you posted, in the same order I would have put them. Epic win!

Listen to Themselves for good hip hop that isn't 100 percent drugs, guns and women. Actually, anything from Anticon Records. Aesop and ep-p, too, but stay away from most of the rap in this thread that isn't them haha. :p

Also: Modest Mouse.

A really good rapper (and I am by no means a fan of rap, so know where I am coming from) is Tech N9ne:

What I have been listening to a whole lot recently is the new Mars Volta album:
