Anyone know of a program that allows you to simply permanently block certain processes from running? I have a few viral/adware processes that won't go away. I tried SpyBot's TeaTimer, but it's not blocking anything, nor does the Spybot system scan do anything, and AdAware is finding nothing.

Grr. I hate you, computer virii. *shakes fist*

Are these processes starting when the pc starts? Or is it something else that starts them that you aren't aware of. Because if this is right, then you can stop stuff from starting up using msconfig (START --> RUN --> "msconfig" --> Startup tab (i think thats what its called, cant look on this pc)). You could also look into getting a registry scanner that will check for any bad keys. I know that Microsoft Antispyware scans teh registry for spyware and I'm sure that antivirus apps do the same. You could try that. Also could you post all the antispyware/antivirus programs you are currently using. One other thing, have you tried googling the virus/adaware processes that are running, might give you some sort of help on how to remove them or stop them from starting if they are hard to remove.

I've tried deleting the registry keys and the startup... thingies, using RegCleaner and MSconfig, respectively. But it keeps coming back. I just finished installing the 90-day trial of Norton Antivirus, so I'll see if that can get rid of it.

Googling it, though, that's a good idea. I'll try it.

And before an hour ago, I was using SpyBot S&D + TeaTimer, and AdAware personal. They won't block the process. But if there's some way to manually add processes to TeaTimer's blacklist, then I'm all for it.

So you where running your system up until not that long ago with no antivirus? Also you may want to try AVG Free Edition. Its a decent Antivirus and its free.

I might try it out once my Norton trial runs out. Unless, of course, it happens to be better than Norton.

How good is it, really?

AVG Free and Microsoft antispyware come highly recommended. 'hijackthis' is also good for finding and permanently deleting reg entries which are obviously evil.

After deleting naughty reg entries, try rebooting into safe mode immediately, and then running all your scans again in safe mode. If you're lucky the shitware which runs in normal mode, and which recreates the deleted stuff, wont be running in safe mode after you deleted the entries, so your antispy can operate freely. Also, turn off system restore when scanning (windows sometimes backs up deleted shitware).

I'll just add that I think IMHO that Adaware is rubbish; not dependable. I'm forever angry at that program since it completely failed to be of use once when my comp was dying of this kind of thing.

Look up HijackThis, it's a pretty awesome program for these sorts of situations.

Do all your cleaning in safe mode.

I recommend Spyware Doctor.. it's far and away the best spyware removal tool I've encountered.

I figured out how to get rid of this specific virus, the MSN 'Block Checker' virus. I looked it up on google. In case anyone has it, here's how to easily get rid of it:

Find the "Block Checker" folder in Program Files
Delete as many files in this folder as possible
rename the remaining files (probably cssrs.exe and block-checker.exe)
cut-and-paste these renamed files to a different location
delete what was originally "cssrs.exe"
open up the Windows Task Manager
close any processes called "cssrs.exe" or "block-checker.exe"
delete what was originally "block-checker.exe"

So yeah. Thanks for the software recommendations too. You guys rule :D
