I friggen swear, nothing ever works for me. Still trying to figure out how to reconfigure my router, but thats not the subject for now. I reformated my computer cuz it was messing up on some games and shit. I got on my Dell and downloaded my motherboard drivers, lan and audio, but now my lan doesnt work! I make a home office network and nothing happens, it worked before. I would ask my friend but he just half-asses me. I have no flipping clue whats going on, so right now I'm music-less, I'm gonna explode!!!

HELP PLZ

Ok,

1) What operating system are you using?
2) Is your Internet Connection Firewall on? (comes with WinXP... this is a common error; if it's on, no network will work
3) Is your computer in the right workgroup?
4) What ar ethe OS for the other comps on the network?

Go into command prompt and type Ipconfig in this PC and the other PC.
Check if the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway is the same. They should be.
The ip should be the same except the last number.

If they are different you can go in properties of the network places and set the specific Subnet Mask/Gateway to match the other PC. The last place in the IP address obviously should differ.

Check the cords and reset the switch or routers that you are using too.

well, the most commone problem is that you leave you windows firewall on, which is on by default.

to check the firewall...

control panel -> Network Settings -> Local Area Network -> Properties -> Advanced.

Also, you might not have the right network services installed. This is probably not the problem because windows automatically installs the basic ones when you install windows.

might want to get service pack 2(RC2) too. the windows firewall in it is MUCH better and more flexible, and it can let your lan function correctly while still protecting you.

thanks for all the help, ill try it out once my sis stops being a bitch and stops wanting on

For some wierd reason the command prompt didnt understand the ipconfig, and i tried everything else. Still no network, I really need to get the network working again so i can get both comps online. Like i said nothing has changed, all I did was reformat my computer, I got the lan drivers for it and all, but now i cant network

when you go to device manager, under network adapters, is a driver installed or is there a yellow exclamantion point on it?

This happens when there is no network conenction being made at all.

make sue you have installed the latest mobo drivers (if you're ethernet is on your mobo) or the latest card drivers if it'sa pci card.

make sure all the cables are plugged in, make sure there is power to your router if you're using one,.

if none of that works, see if you cna get a working pci network card froma friend and try that.

poseyjmac: On this compter (the dell) in the device manager it shows a driver has been installed. But my computer does not have a network adapters option it has 'other devices' and if you expand that it has three things: ethernet controller, sm bus controller and usb controller. And they all have question marks by them.

sidewinderx143: last night i made sure all my plugs were right, reset my router and i have installed my mobo's latest lan driver about 3 times now

sounds like your ethernet connection is either screwed up, or broken. try a pci network card, if you can get one.

I dont know how it would break, thats really wierd. I sent all my music to the dell and then reformated my computer, so i know that the network was working then

ok this sounds like the mobo and the OS dont even SEE the LAN HW, go all the way back into the bios make sure all the built in mobo stuff is turned on. then plug in an ethernet cable, if the port does not light up or blink when powered up, you got a grass roots HW failure. so then disable the built in LAN and try a pci card like stated earlier.
nothing else will work until you get this settled..
