I have 1 PC and 1 Laptop. Both have network cards and all i have is a crossover cable. I want to network them so i can play games on like a mini LAN. how do i do tht between two computers with out a Network HUB. the PC is running Windows XP and the Laptop has Windows 2000

if you were going through a HUB you would need RJ45 straight patch cables, but since you aren't, the RJ45 crossover cable you have should be fine, you should just be able to plug the wire into both machines and assign lan IPs+workgroup.

lol sory i;m a newbee but after plug the wire in wt do i do next?

1. make sure your firewalls are down, this is probably your biggest hurdle (which firewall do you use?)
2. sometimes windows 2000 doesn't like to talk with XP (sibling rivalries i presume) so i would look up issues surrounding that
3. that's about it...

neither use firewalls and wts all this about IP addresses

you need to set them IP addresses... like, give one pc 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 (make subnets 255.255.255.0)

EDIT: Try just setting the ip of the W2K machine to 192.168.0.1 (Network properties (or similar) --> find the TCP/IP protocol --> click properties --> theres an option in there to set an IP) then just plug it into the XP machine. try hosting a game on the windows 2k box and the XP machine will probably autodetect the network
