What are some you'd recommend? I spy some low-priced bioware ones on steam.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, play with the Baldur's Gate Trilogy or BG TuTu mods.

I enjoyed Oblivion. Fallout 3 took a while but I'm just starting to get into it. Like you said, Mass Effect is probably cheap now, so get ready for Mass Effect 2 in January. Dragon Age is supposed to be good, but I'm not particularly interested in it.

Other than that, I'd have to say Borderlands is amazing! If you like FPS's and/or RPG's at all, this game is for you.

Try The Witcher: Enhanced Edition. I don't know how it's priced these days, but judging from the official forums it's enjoyed by a broad spectrum of RPG-inexperienced people, from housewives to geriatrics. Some aspects of it are unwieldy at first, but the learning curve is relatively shallow compared to classics like the BG series or Planescape, while still providing a flavour of the 'true' PCRPG.

Borderlands is not an RPG.

Anyways, I'd recommend Fallout 1 and 2, they're available on Good Old Games for just 10$ a piece and offer enormous value.

Then there are Gothics (1, 2+NotR and 3), Risen, Mass Effect, Morrowind etc.

If you like light RPGs (basically FPSs or hack-n-slashes with stuff like character upgrades or inventory without much consequence to your actions) you might like Oblivion or Fallout 3, since those are easy to get into and don't offer much of a challenge.

Baldurs gate 1 & 2 are must plays (presently replaying BG2 atm) as well as Fallout 1 & 2, & as far as more modern RPGs go I'd say The Witcher is the best port of call.

KOTOR 1 & 2 are great, just play them in order like I didn't. waaa

Mass Effect is also very good. It was odd - I didn't like the male Shepard's VO on the first playthrough, and switching to the female the second time around improved the whole game for me to a surprising extent.

If you're just starting out I think KOTOR1&2 would probably be your best bet for now.
I'm still trying to get into the genre myself and it's pretty tough.

The games I try either have no real tutorials or aren't very clear on a lot of things or do things that I can't get used to.

KOTOR 1/2 are some great Bioware RPGs, especially if you are a fan of Star Wars.

Besides that, Oblivion would also be a good choice due to its simplified mechanics (level up skills based on what you use, real time combat, etc...)

KoTOR 1, 2, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, Jedi Academy is more action game but does have some character development sections, Dragon Age is KoTOR with bows and arrows(play kotor before playing it, so you don't waste a bunch of monies. But I haven't met many people who did not enjoy KoTOR).

Morrowind is good, as is Oblivion, if only or mindless fun. Fallout 3 is good too.

Borderlands has no
real rpg elements

Dragon Age on hard difficulty. throw out the manual

Baldur's Gate Series
Icewind Dale Series
Planescape Torment
Fallout Series
KotOR Series
Neverwinter Nights Series
The Witcher
Dragon Age

Mass Effect (just got it on PC as it is currently only $9.99 on Steam :thumbs:)

I don't think you will be as interested in the next ones, but they are the RPGs I grew up with and are playable and still incredibly awesome with DOSBox now:

Ultima Series
Bard's Tale Series
Legacy of the Ancients Series
Questron Series
Eye of the Beholder Series
Wizardry Series
Dungeon Master Series
SSI Gold Box Series (all of them :))

The spookie Girl on the beach did it for me. She was quality. No ones really matched it tbh.

Obsidian did the second one, not bioware.

They did it in Bioware's style.

Also, check this out;

Spectres=Jedi=Grey Wardens
Sith Empire=Geth=Darkspawn
Malak=Sovereign=Archdemon
