Dunno if this is old news but everytime i see i think 'damn that's brilliant!'
in shops around ireland a new product called v3 has arrived - you can now effectively buy a credit card over the counter of a shop, top it up like a mobile phone and use it as a gift, for shopping and most importantly buying off the web!
the advantages of this are incredible - never use your own cards online again, buy on the web anonymously without fear of scams and theft!

is this old or have you seen it before?

Yes its old, we call these "gift cards" in america. We've had them for YEARS.

Yeah. But do all internet shops accept them?

i believe so, if they accept credit cards theyll more then likely accept the gift cards.

Gift cards are usually for specific shops. But card companies such as Mastercard and Visa also offer giftcards that can be used anywhere like a credit card.

That actually seems kind of cool for people who don't have credid/debit cards.

I don't have that much money on my debit card anyway so I can be (moderately) safe from fraud.

Debit cards are good because you can't take out more than what's in the account.

Wrong. It depends on the type of card, certain banks will let you go overdrawn to an agreed limit. THen there is Maestro, which lets you go overdrawn OVER a pre-agreed limit, this is unauthorised borrowing and can incur serious fines (around £30 for going over the limit + a charge PER transaction over the limit and the cost of the transaction itself)

:)

Bah I always thought I couldn't go over. Oh well.

I still can't see how every online retailer would use it.

i bring this up every time someone complains about not being able to purchase through steam. its a simple solution and would allow you to take advantage of the innovative distribution system of steam.

Yeah, most banks have a "Overdraft" thing. My limit is $500. They charge me a fee per transaction I believe. It works wonders when I spend too much on accident :P

I wonder if they have anything like that in Bahrain...

I'll have to ask around.

They're awesome cos their advert was made by the guy from rathergood.com.

You know, something just occured to me, about using such a card over Steam. Steam asks you for a whole lot of things besides your card number, such as your billing address, first/last name, etc. Does a gift card come with all these things, or are they useless for buying stuff off Steam?

You use your own name on the gift card.

Debit Cards are still better than Credit Cards though since with Credit Cards you're effectively borrowing money as soon as you use it.

Do you have to start using a credit card to get a good credit rating, ie for better mortgages when your older etc?

No, your credit rating is based on your income. It's a bit retarded in some respects since people with low incomes will need to borrow more than people with high incomes but banks and mortgage companies like investment security, if they think your going to be able to keep up the monthly payments and pay them back with interest they'll lend you money. So someone who's getting £40,000 a year has a much better credit rating than someone only on £20,000.
