It should be able to play it.
These system requirements apply to the following games:

* Counter-Strike: Source
* Day of Defeat: Source
* Half-Life 2
* Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
* Half-Life: Source

Minimum System Configuration

* 1.2 GHz Processor
* 256MB RAM
* DirectX 7 capable graphics card *
* Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
* Mouse
* Keyboard
* Internet Connection **
* CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive ***
* Soundcard

Recommended System Configuration

* 2.4 GHz Processor
* 512MB RAM
* DirectX 9 capable graphics card
* Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
* Mouse
* Keyboard
* Internet Connection **
* CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive ***
* Soundcard

* - You must have DirectX 9c installed in order to play Source-engine games.
** - Once games have been installed and authenticated, they may be played offline (without an internet connection).
*** - A Sony SecuROM-compatible CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive is required for retail installations. Games purchased through Steam do not require a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. The Half-Life 2 Retail Collector's edition requires a DVD-ROM drive for installation.

Note: At least 9 GB of free hard drive space are required to install Half-Life 2 retail bundles.

What video card do you have installed?

Everything looks okay but do you know what kind of video card you have? Even if it is Dx9 capable you might have to play with low settings (which you may or may not mind) if you have a lower end video card...

lol good thing you didnt open it. you should know the requirements before you purchase a game. also just because you have direct x 9 installed does not mean it will utilize it and like the post above you will need a dx9 to see all the glory

I am so sorry. I just can't find that info. Could you tell me where to look? I think its the gforce 5 or 7 i really don't know. Please help. Thanks

easiest way is to right click on the desktop and go to properties. when there go to settings and it should say what card you have above your screen resolution setting.

There are a few ways you could check.

Here's one...

-> Right-click on Desktop
-> Go to Properties
-> Go to the Settings tabs
-> Above the Screen resolution it should say Display: "Brand/Model of Monitor on Video Card"

Edit: :upstare:

Thank you so much!!! its the samsung syncmaster 550s(t) on Nvidia gforce 6600 gt.

Yes. You will be able to run the game at around generally Medium settings. Enjoy. :)

last question: when you say medium settings, are they in the game or do I have to put them in the computer settings? if yes where do i go to do that? I am very compter know-nothing kinda girl! thanks

When I say Medium settings, that means that the game will automatically set your video settings to where your game will play best. If you want to change any of these settings, you can to do that to tweak your performance. When you boot up the game and have reached the main menu, go to:

-> Options
-> Video
-> Advanced...

There you can change settings from texture detail to shadow detail to filtering mode. Changing your resolution can also impact performance as well.

girl... nice to see its the Half life 2 fan base isnt just a bunch of nerdy dudes... and no, half life 2 will automatically adjust to you computer and video hard ware to try to balance visuals and performance, if your not seeing good performance eg: low frame rate (fps) then you should lower your video settings and make sure that the screen resolution is at a good place, your card and processor should be able to handle 1024x760 just fine, maybe even a notch higher... what screen resolution do you have it set on as of now?

Thank God!! thanks to you all for your imput and help. Will let you know how I love this game and getting addictied to it!
