Valve has made some significant changes to the Team Fortress 2 item drop system which will be shipped today if it's not already.

  • Previously, we rolled randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop. Now we roll to determine when your next item drop will occur. So you're guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. The bulk of drop complaints we've received in the past have been from players having unlucky streaks, where they didn't find any items for weeks. That won't be possible now.[br]
  • We've significantly increased the rate at which item drops occur, compared to the previous average interval.[br]
  • There's now a maximum amount of playtime per week in which you get item drops. Playing beyond that amount won't find any more items. The amount varies, but if you play an hour or so a day you're good. Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine.[br]
  • If you're an idler, you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change. Sorry. On the bright side, there's less reason to idle, because it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly.[br]
  • Everyone else will find items more frequently, and with greater regularity.

More details can be found on the Official Team Fortress 2 Blog.

Dammit why couldn't they have rolled out this change back when I still played? D:

hopefully I'll not get only Equilizers or Sandviches... Like I do now -.-'

This is absurdly overdue and it actually irritates me that it took so long to make the system just a bit more reasonable.

Could I maybe have my first hat now? In any case I kinda like this update.

One hat would weigh as much as a tank if you consider all the icons' worth of piles of scrap metal that go into it.

Sounds good... maybe I can craft something besides metal.

I'm 2 scrap metals away from crafting my first hat. And I've had A LOT of drops in that time.

3 refined metals (27 scraps!), 2 reclaimed metals (6 scraps), 1 scrap, 1 spy class token (4 more weapons).

So I'm 6 weapons short of 112, the amount you need to make a class specific hat. And I bet it's anti-climatic...

You're going to end up getting the hat you wanted as a drop when you're one drop away.

lol, I was just thinking that... I'm trying to craft the Otolaryngologist's mirror, and I'd be burned if I got it as a drop shortly thereafter.
