I just bought components to make a new computer, and I have run in to problems.

The following are what I bought:

Core 2 Duo E6400 2.16GHz
Inno3D GF 7300LE 256MB PCI-E DVI
Corsair Memory 1GB 240DIMM PC5300 UNBUFFERED CL5
Gigabyte S775 Intel 965P ATX GLan HD 8Ch Audio ATX S/Pipe

What else I have from my old comp:

Seagate 7500.7 120GB HDD
400W PSU

The problem is that once the comp starts to load windows, is restarts the computer, but not before the blue screen of death pops up for about a half a second. From what I could see, it looked like assembler language that pops up.

I've ruled out the possibility that its the HDD, as I have even been attempting to make a clean reformat of the HDD. The DVD-drive reads the XP CD but will skip ahead to the XP selection (where you can select safe mode/ run with command prompts/ etc), from where I will make any selection, and the Blue Screen persists.

One other person on Dabs.com has had the same problem as me, using the same GPU brand and type, but it seems odd that the comp won't even let me run partition tools from the boot CD

Has anybody else had a problem like this?

What connection from the HDD to the mobo? Is it SATA or an IDE/UDMA cable?

If it's the latter, make sure it's an 80-wire cable (count them). If you can only count 40, you've found the problem.

Another possible problem is the memory - if you have two modules, remove one. If the same happens, put it back in and remove the other one.

Not sure what else it could be, to be honest.

and if you can, try and get a shot or at least try to read the blue screen window.....is it and IRQ or memory error? etc.
That can help you diagnose whats going on.

40 pin wouldn't cause restarts would it?

Sounds like RAM or PSU fault to me, most likly RAM given the BSOD

Yep it does ... in this exact situation it has these results. You put a 40 wire IDE cable in, instead of an 80 wire UDMA cable ... and then try and install XP ... it restarts instead of booting.

Bad memory is a very likely candidate in this scenario though. Perhaps an incompatibility?

Did you previously do a clean format when building with these new components? Or did you just try to boot up with the old install? So would your attempt at making a clean install this time be the 1st or 2nd on this machine?

I'm also wondering about

You would just have to hit Enter when it asks to boot from the disk. Or it will boot to the existing install.

I've just realised 'what if I pressed enter while reading from disk', whilst I was at the pub
