Ok, I' finally buying a new computer, and was wondering, is this a good system for $700 canadian? And how well will it run HL2?

ASUS P4P800s-x Main Board
512M DDR 400 RAM
ATI RADEON 9250 128MB
Onboard 6 CH Sound, 10/100 LAN
160GB/7200rpm/8M HDD

You should get a better video card, even if you really have to skimp for it.

I'd recomend at least a 9600xt.

No, it will run just fine. HL2 supports multiple DX modes, therefore you can increase performance while decreasing visual quality all the way down to a geforce 2(much older than the card you are getting). So although it may not look as nice as on my machine, you can make it run just as well.

I'd go for a cheaper CPU, smaller drive and use the money to get a better GFX card.

As a matter of fact, I did exactly that. I went for a P4 2.8, a 80 GB drive and a 9800 Pro.
