I've noticed my CPU, Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz, has been running at temperatures far too high. The cores range between 60-70 when idle, and go into the 80s during load.

So can anyone recommend a good CPU cooler for a reasonable price?

My motherboard is Asus P5K-SE and I don't wanna be spending more than 30 GBP.

I think I have the same CPU as you, and it's been making more noise and possibly higher temperatures. I have 4 really good stock fans, so I think I'm set, but I think it's not enough. I think I'm having the same problem as you. :(

turn the PC off remove the stock fan remove old heat paste reapply.done.
Also get rid of dust in the cooler.

But I second the AC freezer 7 pro on a budget ($30). Maybe drop your temps 10 C since you are running a quad. Although a lot less noise than stock. I don't think you will find a heatsink to drop your temps by a more than 20C for just $30.
Otherwise you may want to find a place with thermalright's ultra 90 heatsink in stock and a quiet 120mm fan ($10). The 90 is not as tall as the Ultra 120 and not as heavy. Better for the motherboard.
Or a scythe heatsink+fan.

What is the temp in your room? <- important

The temp in my room ranges from 20-25C. And those tower heatsinks look pretty heavy, does it cause any problems with motherboards?

You just don't want to be someone who goes to lans often with one of those guys on your board. ;)
If the PC isn't moved much, you are fine. The bigger ones are just a lot of weight away from the board so if they get jostled or bounced around can pry off the board or break the board.

From my memory the AC Freezer 7 Pro isn't that heavy compared to things like thermal right's Ultra 120 or the Tuniq Tower...those are significant heavyweights.

I reckon I'll go for the AC Freezer 7 Pro, since I really don't wanna be spending much after buying a new TV.

Does it definitely fit my motherboard?

Your room temp isn't bad (25c). CPU really shouldn't be hitting 80C regularly for load. That's 55 degrees over room temp...
Good air coolers ($40+fan) can keep your CPU ~10-20c over room temp.

We'll have to see how the AC freezer 7 pro does for ya.

After playing HL: Episode 2 my temps were 90C! Dear God...

I'm ordering ASAP. I sure hope this works.

Edit: Bought the AC Freezer 7 Pro.

Make sure the front vent isn't blocked by carpet if the PC is on the floor or the computer isn't backed up too close to the wall (slows air from leaving the PC). Having the PC off the floor is better anyway so dust doesn't build up fast.
