A new demo recording format for Team Fortress 2 is nearing beta release, this comes as players have been breaking demo files after downloading new updates.[br]

The new format will allow you to request the demo file from the server, after you finish a round you are particularly proud of, or scored "an awesome kill".[br] This file will have the complete game state instead of just what your client saw. In addition, "the format has a some side benefits, like supporting full backwards & forwards time scrubbing".[br]

Head over here to read the full interview.

This sounds so awesome. It is a bit like the Battle Recorder in BF2, only better.

NEVER mention the BR in BF2 in comparison to anything else....

This does sound like a pretty neat idea...will this not be implemented on any other game in the future, I wonder?

I hate the BR in BF2, It never worked for me.

Presumably, they'll roll it out to L4D (and include it with L4D2) after testing it for a while with TF2. Maybe they'll even include it in further singleplayer games.
I have to admit, there's been many times when I wish there'd been a "snapshot" button where you could take the last 30 or 60 seconds and play it back/save it. Screenshots don't generally do justice to the "OMG! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT JUST HAPPENED!" moments when all you get to see by the time you hit the screenshot button is a pile of gibs.

So yeah, great idea. I'm just going to be annoyed when they roll it out for L4D, rendering all my demos unwatchable.

I read the title and though they were making major changes to the Demoman.

Do you guys realise the ridiculous cinematography potential in this update? I mean, Source was stupidly empowering in the first place, but they're making this big.

So if it's got the entire game, not just your view of it, does that mean that you'll be able to see yourself when you use the smoothing?

Valve has been talking about this tech since before Half-Life 2 came out!!!! ****ing YES! Cant wait for this to be rolled out in all future Valve games as well. I use to be big on making CSS videos and etc!

You can do this already in L4D and TF2 with the thirdperson console command. But yes - you'll presumably be able to switch between players during demo playback.

I was thinking like flying around yourself with the smoothing tool or drive mode, but yeah that'll be a nice addition.

The backwards time skipping will be a huge help too.
