new editor, need help getting started

i used to use the program called valve hammer editor and i am now wanting to start editing for halflife 2. i was wondering if there is a newer program to use or if i should still use valve hammer editor. also i would be helpful if someone could tell me about any other programs that could come in handy for me. thanks.

You can still use hammer, but the maps you create will be updated through a simple new compiling software... Dont worry, its all good.
Just means when you come to compile it, you will be able to add A LOT more features to your map

btw hammer once was called worldcraft..why was it renamed?(i used to map with worldcraft for hl1 mp)

Well, Onions, the new one will be very similiar to the old one, so having any knowledge of the old one would be pretty good for making HL2 maps, wouldn't you say?

And I don't know why it was renamed, maybe Valve just had to put their name in there (Worldcraft to Valve Hammer Editor)

Simple guys. The game WarCraft and the editor WorldCraft got confusing to many people. However, I believe it was changed to let the users understand that it was only intended for valve products, not other games.

On the other hand, in my personal opinion, I think that the editor beeps. The engine was based behind DirectX which is also not very good. You guys really need to invest in making a full 3D world that is unlimited in space and time. A simple AI (A real AI) could do the programming for us. I hope technology moves forward real quick because I am getting old and I would like to program for real earth based life-forms that have the power to do anything they want. Including time and space for all time.

Remember, everyone here has something between their ears. Use every bit of that power for good and truth and the path will be complete. The power is within three under the stars of the night through the atoms of space. Gravity doesn’t exist, so why does one still believe these bogus stories. Lets glide through the stars and become one.


I could fit billions of instructions on one DNA string. Ones and zeros only exist on earth. I’d say that 10 Terabytes should do the job.

nope. your wrong. It is very close to the same old one. They have said that over and over. So, if you learn the hammer editor very well, you will be able to transfer that knowledge very easy to the new stuff.
Don't stop learning, maps no matter which game you play were all made with editors like the hammer editor in one way or another.

i know how to make a good map using valve hammer editor already so i will just wait for a new version if and when they release one. i cant really be bothered working on anything not being sure if its actually going to alright to use the current version.
