New Elder Scrolls IV preview, new screenshots

Holy hell.

Thank you. :)

I can't believe how good the new textures are. Looks like every stone was modeled.

Wow. Forget HL2, I want Oblivion now.

I really can't wait for this game. Looks like they are going to fix all of the problems with Morrowind.

- New Combat system? Check
- photorealistic faces? Check
- NPC routines? Check

Not to mention the graphics. I just hope it has the 100+ hours of gameplay like Morrowind and the other The Elder Scroll games.

The only thing i hated about TES3 was the AI thinking that you wanted to talk to them everytime you went past, at one point some guy chased me accross half the map to tell me he didn't have time to talk so make it quick. Hope that gets fixed.

It sounds absolutely amazing, and I am a fan of Morrowind. I just hope that, with all the new fast travel and etc., I will be able to just go into a random direction on feet and explore.

wow
great
i loved morrowind , cant wait for this one !!

It's looking very nice now thats for sure.

Good few months I better put aside for it too heh

i want i want i want! :bounce:

looks amazing, sounds like they're making superb progress...i can't wait :D

Ooh! Ooh! YES! This is the best news I've heard since Half-Life 2! What's up with the new combat system though? Is it still a "roll the dice" kinda thing, or is it more FPS-like, where it actually matters if you hit the guy?

I'm not really fussed about the combat being like it was, it fits in with the whole RPG thing, which is what it is, so i doubt they'll go all point and shoot FPS style, would probably spoil it for the RPG fans

They address that issue pretty well in the preview. I'm pretty happy with what they've done with it.

Combat

Combat is one of the major gameplay elements that's being completely revamped in Oblivion. Some of the most interesting feedback the team got from Morrowind players concerned the nature of combat. PC gamers are used to Western RPG conventions, most of which are derived from Dungeons & Dragons -- conventions that include behind-the scenes die rolls to determine success or failure. Those conventions aren't nearly as common on consoles, especially in first-person perspective games such as Morrowind. Howard described it this way: "It's amazing how many people played Morrowind and said (to us), 'Why is my character missing when he swings? The enemy is right there!,' or 'Why did that guy see me? I thought I was hiding.'"

"We've realized how much combat people really do in a game like this and made it more of a priority to get it right," Howard continued. The Oblivion team actually developed three entirely new combat systems and did extensive testing on them all before settling on the one that will be in the final game. The basic idea of Oblivion combat is to impart the 'kinetic energy feeling' of guys bashing each other with swords. The game will have a number of special moves available and blocking is actively under player control, not automatic. As a result, timing moves, shielding yourself, and responding to the enemy becomes a key strategy in fighting. The team also didn't shy away from the gore either. It isn't over the top or gratuitous, but it does fall in line with the design philosophy of trying to make the game as realistic as possible. Basically, when you really smack someone with a sword, you expect a certain level of blood to come spewing out, so the team is trying to fulfill those expectations.

Action gamers, on the other hand, won't necessarily have an unfair advantage. As Howard himself pointed out, the combat system in every Elder Scrolls game has walked a fine line between RPG and action. They've all been first-person and players always controlled their sword arm in real time, but in prior games, the die rolls added an extra layer of randomness between the player and the world. While the combat system of Oblivion tries to remove those layers, RPG players can breathe easy knowing that their beloved stats haven't gone anywhere. This difference this time is that the player's stats determine what they can do, and how effective those things are, but they're now in full control of the "when." Blocking a blow is manual, for instance, but the effectiveness of that block is determined by your character's block skill -- things like how much damage the block absorbs, how much fatigues it causes and so forth. Striking an enemy with a sword is no longer random, but the amount of damage caused is a function of strength and weapon skill.

Im confused. This article said that Oblivion will be geographically bigger than Morrowind but I read before that Oblivion would be smaller because of the time that it takes to create the amazing models and effects.

Another thing, I think it would be cool if they allowed the scenario of the soldiers fighting and every store getting robbed to happen sometimes. It would be so cool if you walked into a town and there was an all out fight with 20 soldiers and the townspeople were looting stores everywhere. I would feel like I was in a real world with real humans.

That's just amazing.
We need a good "jaw-dropping" smiley here.

Oblivion is smaller than Morrowind in scope, geographically it'll be bigger, lots to explore, but wont be as deep as morrowind was, not so many side quests or dungeons hidden away, likely just a main quest, some extra's, very impressive landscape and interiors.

Will still be plenty to do, and if its still moddable to the extent Morrowind was.. well its gonna be massive eventually.

WOW
if they can combine ground-breaking graphics like that with fantastic rpg gameplay, it will be an instant classic
CANT WAIT!
hl2 will keep me busy til then :p

gameplay will be fine, people still play (if they can get it running) daggerfall, after all these years and are still finding new things.

It's gonna be fun to see what kind of PC is needed for it though, didn't Morrowind require a monster computer when that first turned up?

No!! Don't loose faith in HL2 :)

I neve got in to morrowind, but I will defiantly check this one out.

Yeah morrowind requried a monster computer when it first came.
And because on how it draws things(draws unneccesary things) it still hogs a good amount of FPS.

But when morrowind came out, it was revolutionary. Had groundbreaking graphics, freedom, customization, everything. It still looks good today and is by far one of the greatest single player rpg's. Because of the construnction set(also revolutionary) it still massivly lives with the tons of modifications.

oooooooo, looks superb

im assuming i will need to upgrade on my vid card for those ghrapics to run

right on my computer

I got Morrowind III, thought it was boring as hell (lot's of running around and most skills were rather pointless most of the time, especially when you could get quite good armour early on), I hope this one's better.

mortiz, it isn't morrowind 3. Its "The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind"
Morrownid is just the island it takes place on.
Mortiz, what kind of armor would u say is good? I mean Deadric stuff owns. Glass is simply astonishing for light weight players. I mean if you think having chitin or steel is good hehe your way off. You should get Tribunal, dl lots of the mods then trust me you would love it alot more. In tribunal there is always something to do. I mean hell, i helped in a play..got rushed by a dude and killed him. He had some very sweat stuff on him, got that. Went in an epic sized dungeon...just pure amazing..orcs and everything. Every now and then when you sleep, you will here something and wake up and an assassin is back ahahahahhaha.

Mortiz i can't see what you see thats bad about morrowind. I mean, a huge world in which you can steal, or really do anything. You could travel, or join a guild. You could do quests in the guild and get some money. You could follow the main quest, you could really do alot. You arn't put twords any 1 specfic goal. Personally I usually travel to balmora, steal some stuff n sell it. Get a dark assassin after me, get to tribunal n pwn.
But overall, if you get nuf mods mortiz its amazing. Fight mods and everything. New texture mods... it's all pimpin. I mean hell ive had like 50 diffrent types of people to choose from one time, with loads of new...everything really :). It's the funnest single player RPG ever created.

wow looks great

but is for PC only right?

The lack of occlussion culling was unforgivable, granted the netimmerse (gamebryo) engine at the time couldn't do it off the shelf, but wouldn't have taken much work to add the code required.

Imagine how Morrowind would have been like now if it only rendered what you could see.. I imagine there would be a mod out now that places grass all over the island, that, like all other MW mods would make it a whole new game all over again :)

I just really hope Oblivion will be as moddable as morrowind is. Really can't wait to see the things people will create.

Screw HL2. I'm getting this baby.

*jaw drops on floor*

your willing to not get hl2 for a game comming in 1.5 years?

Just get both HL should keep you happy until Oblivion is ready to go. By then you'll likely have Stalker too and other neat games.

I never actually played morrowind. After seeing this though, I might have to give it a try.

Could anyone possibly point me in the general direction of some good mods to add for a first time player?

Two things that have just sold me on this game:

1. With proper forests I can now finally become a proper "ranger" character.

2. The AI, obviously it needs some work but this got me excited:
In fact, one of the interesting problems that the team has had to face came about precisely because the AI is so good. According to Howard, the AI has caused guards to decide to eat and go hunting deer, only to get themselves arrested for attacking something. When they fight back against the arresting guard, the other guards see a fight and try to join in. In not too much time, every guard in the town was involved in the scuffle, which left the rest of the town open to thievery by other NPCs, resulting in empty stores. Much of the team's current effort is going into putting sensible governors on the AI's behavior to avoid situations like empty stores that would result in situations that wouldn't be fun for the player.
lol. :D

Let me put it this way, I admit, the armour I did get wasn't the best in the game, but it allowed me to kill any enemy I came across easily, the game was just boring to me, perhaps a bit too "open" for my tastes.

I also did download a lot of mods, but since bloodmoon came out it's hard to distinguish between which one's will work with morrowind/tribunal.

Morrowind STILL requires a monster comp to get running even at an acceptable fps rate.

As for the grass mod, there IS a grass mod which is nearly finished which covers many areas in, you guessed it, grass! Check out the mod section of the official forums.

Oblivion will have an easy land creation tool in the CS - huge land areas will be generated quickly with a few clicks :bounce:

Yeah I loved Morrowind, still play it actually (Played, Tribunal messed up my whole install), so I'll definately be getting this little baby when it arrives. I'll need to upgrade from my 9800 pro and AMD 3500+ though :(
