New Fan for AMD AM3 processors?

What I've always hated about stock fans was that they were too loud. And the stock fan that comes with the AMD Phenom II 955 processor sounds like a buzzsaw during gaming. It's relatively silent during normal times, but still, I want to be able to hear my own M16 when I spray bullets toward virtual foes.

So, I figured that I need a new CPU fan. BUT WHICH? Something cheap, something effective, and more importantly, something silent. I would guess that fans for the same AM3 sockets would be interchangeable..

Anybody with experience changing their stock fans into something better? Help would be appreciated.

cooler

I'm pretty sure any cooler that would work for one of these (AM, AM2 and AM3) works for all since they are the same CPU socket size just different internal specs (higher HT speed etc).

Scythe makes some quite coolers.

If you don't mind tall coolers. Some don't like because they fear with the weight they will bend the board or if they fall it would break other components inside. I would agree if it was a PC for LANs and was picked up and moved a lot. But otherwise not.
They usually cool better though and have a quieter fan.

I have the version for Intel CPUs on my quad right now. Pretty quiet and does well.

Oh thanks. I was worried that if I went and bought something it might not fit on my board. :)

Edit: I find the last one most appealing. Thansk!
