Has anyone seen the new G5 mouse? Both forward + back buttons, textured grip on top.

Oooh, nice. I have the current version and i love it. Obviously not a lot changed, but i do like the sound of added grip and the mouse 5 button back. Not sure it warrants ditching the current G5 though !

I'm looking for a new mouse, but haven't found one I like. I like this new G5, I'm considering getting one now. I'm glad I didn't buy the old one the other day at the store. I hope it comes in a different color. Do you think it will?

I've been wanting a new mouse for years. I got this MS comfort optical mouse 3000 like two years ago becuase it was only $20, and my other mouse broke. It's a very good mouse actually, but ironically, it's one of the most uncomfortable mice I've ever used. I hate it.

I was considering the Creative Fatal1ty 2020 mouse. It feels a little short when I checked out the demo unit, though I'm sure I would get used to it.

It looks cool and it feels pretty decent. I like how it's wide. The teflon feet pads are really ****in slick.

I might order a G5 later, but I was kind of hoping for the ULTIMATE game mouse. What are the best gaming mice out there, at any price? I should probably just type that into google...

A question. I don't trust wireless mice. Aren't they a bit jittery and harder to control? I like not having a cord, but, if you set it up right, after you use a corded mouse for a while, the cord no longer pulls or anything - it's like it's not there. Especially if you have your mouse cursor speed very high, and have a high precision lazer eye, so you don't have to move it much. Does anyone else think that wireless mice are less responsive and have other issues?

Virus the G5 and Razer Death Adder are consider the best.

As for me I have a mx510, I don't like it that much. It feels uncomfortable if I rest my palm on it, especially my thumb.
I like the razer diamondback and g3 the most, for some reason the most comfortable mouses to me are the small ambidextrous mouses. Even though I am a right hander, and the right hand design should be more comfortable to me. That said, most people I know
disagrees, but the best way to decide is to go to a store and try them out, mouses are a really personal thing, opinions vary a lot.

I'll just stick with my mx518 :D No need to change unless I want a worse performing laser mouse lol.

And virustype, the Fatal1ty mouses suck in performance. There was a review on the reading performance of all current mice but I lost the link in a reformat. Asus can probably link you there.

My recommendation to anyone would still be the Logitech MX518 or the Razer Diamondback.

Sucks? Probably the Fatality 1010.

The 2020 is the newer version of the Fal1ty mouse and it fixes all of the problems according to this review it's damn good.

2020 said:
2400 cpi HD-Laser Engine
6.4 Megapixel Per Second Tracking
Tracks up to 20g's of movement acceleration
G-Weight Interchangeable Weight System
USB 1.1 and 2.0 Compatible
1000Hz USB polling supported

The 2020 also has on the fly switching, up to 2400 DPI, which is the highest out there. I just want the best in the world, I don't want to choose between 3 high end grade game mice, which one has it all over the others? :)

I'll check out the 518. Is that the $99 logitech mouse? I think thats the one I want. Hopefully it's no longer 100 dollars.

Ehm no it's about $35 and it still outperforms any new mouse out there (especially the laser crap). 1600dpi is more than enough.

ANd yes, it does suck. SOMEONE POST THAT LINK plz.

edit: yays finally found it myself http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=1

Thanks for taking the time to find that link for me, it's been really helpful. Not am I going to save a bundle of money, I'm going to be much happier with the mouse I buy.

I just found out that the old mouse I loved was using was a total piece of shit for gaming. It seemed OK to me, but after listening to the explanations it all makes sense. For times when you move the mouse fast, the cursor goes irratic slightly. I didn't realize that there could be such a vast difference in mouse performance in the expensive mice. Just because a mouse costs $50 or more, doesn't mean that a $20 mouse can't completely destroy it in terms of game performance. I actually notice the error when I move my mouse, and so I've never really liked the one I use now.

I'm going to buy a Logitech MX500, but first I want to make sure I can find a program to "overclock the USB port that the mouse is plugged into",because it seems that the mouse has flaws if you don't.

Also, I'm not sure if I should get the MX518 instead of the MX500, becuase I play with medium to higher mouse sensitivity, and the Mx500 is only 400dpi. My current mouse is 1200, but I was happier with my older less sensitive mouse that broke. I think it was somewhere around 600dpi, so I guess I'll be OK.

I've never even heard of overclocking a USB port. Anyone done this before?

I'm going to go look for myself, but if you know where to look please tell me.

I can't wait to replace this stupid uncomfortable sucky mouse. LOL

No I recommend the MX518 over the MX500 or MX510, simply because its DPI is 1600. The mx500 only has 400 and mx510 has 800.

Yeah, thats the two I can't choose between. the mx518 or the mx500.

right, but if you can deal with the 400 dpi (which is slower than average mice obviously) the mx500 scored better overall.

According to gotfrag, most lan players use the M$ IntelliMouse explorer 3.0
http://hardware.gotfrag.com/portal/story/34387/

That is a good mouse ( the 3.0 old one) but that review is basically all *'seat of pants' testing, and the following link bellow backs up the testing of all the mice with fact and stats, crushing all the hype.

* 'seat of pants' as in - "i have 100 more horespower now in my car, judging by the seat of my pants"

as you can see on page 21, the mx500 scored tops in almost every category (plus i love the way it looks lol)
http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=21
note, the mx500 was tested while the USB port was overclocked. I can't do this because I have other devices using the usb ports, so I'm thinking i should go with the more sensitive mx518. if you use the tweaks at the last link on this post, you can use each in game sensitivity settings, and putting the control panel mouse sensitivity to 6 (average).

EDIT: I think i can use a usb/ps2 adapter for the mouse and overclock the PS/2 port instead, so once again the mx500 might be a good choice.

I won't have to move the mouse fast to move more, so the fact that it is less accurate than the mx500 at fast speeds won't be a factor, since it will never be experienced for me.

on page 22, final results page
http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=22

so I'll probably go with the mx518, but i need to read some more.

The following link is a really big help for me at least. It's about setting up your mouse for CS, but much of the information can be used in any game, especially Firs person games.
you can skip over sections that don't pertain to you.
http://www.overclock.net/computer-peripherals/173255-cs-s-mouse-optimization-guide.html

hey, does the 518 come in other patterns or colors? I don't dig the abused look of it too much.

Don't think the 518 comes in any other colours. Brilliant mouse though, every bit as good as the G5 (and technically better, although in the real world they feel identical and work identically) and cheaper. I bought both of my brothers 518's when their previous mouses died ! I have a G5. I'd go for a 518 personally, with a decent mouse mat, otherwise the G5 and Razer Deathadder are both fantastic as well.

Seriously WTF at those stats Virus posted.
And why is the mx510 not on there, is it to similar to the mx500 or mx518 to be specifically listed.

And what program did that guy use for those tests. Because his findings are pretty much disputed by every other review I have come across.

I got the link from The Brick.

Basically, I linked to the bricks link, but I linked to the last 2 pages.

At the bottom of it, click page one, to see how he got the results.

Edit: click page 3.

EDIT2: Do you have the 510?

One tricks that was tucked away up some sleeves until recently was how to change the USB polling rate to faster than the Windows default of 125hz. For all intents and purposes the default 125hz polling rate has a 8ms built in response time (lag) that cannot be overcome without changing the usbport.sys file. If you change the polling rate to 250hz your mouse response time drops to 4ms. At 500hz it drops to 2ms and 1000HZ it drops to 1ms. This is an obvious advantage in a gaming environment. Some Logitech and Microsoft mice also have a huge performance boost when you overclock the mouse port, because of an interface limit related to the 8-bit data bus. Specifically they are: Logitech's MX300, MX500 & MX510 and Microsoft's WMO, IE3.0 & Laser 6000. My recommendation is to set the USB rate to 500Hz for these mice. However increasing the reporting rate of any mouse will benefit from smoother tracking and faster response, however not all mice will dramatically reduce negative acceleration and improve perfect control like these do.

You can set the usb port of only your mouse to overclock 500 or 1000Hz with incredible resutls for that mouse. Let me know if you want download links. I am currently investigating overclocking my keyboard at the moment, to go from 8ms delay to 1ms delay. wewt. I have already figured how to overclock the mx500 if I decide to get it. I might get the mx500 and the mx518, becuase I can. :D

I have the mx510 (actually I have two lol), the mx518 and the razer copperhead. mx518 > mx510 > razer copperhead.

The guy explained the way he tested in the article, read it.

Edit: btw 400dpi doesn't only mean it's slower. it also means that it's less precise at the same mouse speeds. Lower resolution mice skip pixels when you try to aim precisely. With 1600dpi or higher it's perfectly smooth even at high sensitivities. Especially with sniping etc this is very nice.

I thought people turned their dpi down when sniping, from 1600/2000 to 400 for example. Thats why some mouses have that dpi switch button.

Could you explain further why his testing method is skewed/ doesn't take things in to account.

Yeah, because I'm a high sensitivity user. I like it so I move my mouse about 2 to 4 inches to turn around (180) that way, I almost never have to pick my mouse up to re-center it, and I don't have to move my arm at all, I just move my hand, thats how you avoid those mouse injuries. I just rest my wrist on the desk, and I don't need to move it at all. For me, it's much faster to turn around, or turn down the hallways or whatever. I don't want to hear my mouse banging around on the desk, picking it up to turn around like some of those CS freaks. ;)

Then the mx518 is the mouse you want.

Yes but that's just because at the same sensitivity, a lower dpi means slower movement. Some people find it easier to aim when it's a bit slower I guess.

Ehm... it isn't?

Read this page. http://www.esreality.com/?a=longpost&id=1265679&page=3

All other mouse reviews I've seen are based on opinions, including how they felt the sensor performed. How the reviewer uses his mouse when testing it in games may not show faults with the sensor or give you much info. An opinion is the only way to review most of the things about a mouse and you should probably read several to get an idea about how it feels. But having the sensor actually benchmarked is a huge plus since the info is consistent and detailed.

Thank you guys for all your advice and help.

I was seriously considering a logitech mouse for a while, because I have placed my hand on a demo unit in the store and it was like, molded for my hand. The buttons and wheel felt like a $100 mouse (and it actually was $100 at this store, though I'm not sure of the model) and that's the reason I didn't buy it.

$100 is a bit pricey for a mouse. It would be worth it, if I was sure that it was the best mouse in the world, but luckily, the price of the mx518 droped down to 39.99 (from like $65 when it first came out) at newegg, with free shipping to boot, so I ordered it, and I should get mine in a few days.

I am really looking forward to unpluging this hand cramp generator 3000 gaming nightmare device, and plugging in the mouse 'from heaven' as one reviewer put it. I'll be going from one of the worst mice tested, to one of - if not the best mouse tested. I don't see how I could go wrong, especially at that price.

:D

Thanks again, ALL of you guys are REALLY helpful. :)

Brick, I did used to think same as you: that the ball tracked mouses are more accurate than laser mouses. After i bought the G5; boy was I wrong lol.
You haven't seen preciseness until you use the G5 in FPS games and online FPS games, boy is it always on the mark and tracks those little bastards in my sniper scope, head-shot, head-shot, head-shot, head-shot.

This mouse is Evil I'll tell ya.

On the other hand; I see no significant hardware changes in the new G5 mouse than the old G5 mouse except color. I do have the forward and backward buttons on top of my G5 and the double-click on the side, which I think is rather a very good design. what I wish this mouse had is a button you can designate for weapon reload rather than hitting "R" on KB for reload. Maybe I do have it but not aware of it. lol.

Barney it's not only about precision here. The difference between 1600 and 2000dpi is pretty small. And I do have experience with laser mice because I have and used a razer copperhead for a few months and I've played at friends who have the G5. Just slowly moving around or for precision aiming it doesn't make a bit of difference if you have an optical of a laser mouse. I'm a fanatic quake 3 player and I DID notice the speed limit of the copperhead. The performance of laser vs optical is the same or worse for the laser. Also the optical ones are a lot cheaper. Can't go wrong with the mx518. Also I can do headshots just fine in css with my mx518 ;)

I don't know whether I misquoted you or not, I was talking about migrating from ball to laser.
A relative had one of those HP laser mouse long time ago when laser first started coming out, and this thing he used was all over the place, once the mouse is moved an inch.
Ever since that first expression; I could not settle with giving it another chance, till I bought the G5 and getting sick of constant socket cleaning.
The first time I used the G5 online, I had 31 head-shots in one map of SOF2 sniping. extremely precise peace of hardware.
Then I asked myself; how did I play without it?

The lazers burn out. I can't speak for every lazer mouse, but I had one about a year, and it burned out under normal use.

I'm not sure of the life expectancy of a lazer, but if I remember correctly it's about 50,000 hours, but there is no gaurantee. Mine didn't last nearly that long.

Oh I thought you were comparing moving from optical to laser with ball to optical.

Btw you sound like a reviewer. You like the mouse a lot so you praise it into heaven, unknown that the older optical mice are technically better.

Btw I thought the first laser mouse was the mx1000? Well at least the first I knew about.

Sorry, I didn't see this post until now.

You can download several USB overclockers in several places. Try finding them on these links

Scroll to Advance Optimization and start there. I specifically remember them explaining that you gain performance from overclocking the Mx510 on this page, and he recommended 500 mhz, but you will probably get a bigger performance boost from 1000 mhz, from what I've learned in the mouse test about other logitech mice.

The two programs I ended up with appear to only overclock the port the mouse is plugged into, but you will want to find some kind of help file, read me, or browse forum history by using google to search for info about the program.

I'm guessing it will only overclock your mouse port, you will want to use the same port every time. I don't know anymore details, without researching some more. I don't want my mouse overclocked, because it won't benefit my particular model.

The program called usbmrs11.exe simply asks what frequency to use when you launch it (IN SAFE MODE) I would recommend you have a backup mouse handy, and, or you can try moving the mouse to another port or use a PS/2 adapter in case for some reason something went wrong. You can revert the changes by launching the application again, but without mouse control, you may not be able to.

there is a program recommended on one of the pages I linked to that can show you if the overclock was beneficial or not, so I would try that if I were you. Also test some games to see what speed you like.

==

Overclocking the PS/2 port was much simpler (although not quite as good because it can't be as fast) and also described in the Counter Strike article :
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...esnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=usbmrs11.exe&spell=1

Good luck. Make sure to let us know if your mouse performance increases.

I used to use usbmrs11.exe, pretty sure it overclocks all usb ports though, as i recall it provided no options other than the frequency you wanted the usb to run at.

Funneh. I read this article yesterday and today I found out one of my colleagues has one on his desk. Better still: he has two more at home. Don't be surprised if you find a couple of these mice on eBay tonight.

You plan to steal them and then sell them on eBay?

ROFL. Hell yeah, what else do you expect?
I always praise everything I like into heaven and drag everything I hate through the mud.
I can't call myself a reviewer as I can some times be one-sided.
I've been using Logitech M-BA47 (Which did super job) for almost 7yrs, so I don't really know much about mouses nor did I ever care about them much.
As far as mouse goes; I only get a one that suits my hand and never look for replacement again, unless I have to. and in this case I couldn't stand cleaning the ball-socket every other day to minimize the (speed-bump like) jigger motion; whenever a little dust accumulates in the ball-socket, so decided to replace it with a mouse which has no moving parts in it, but I never thought that the replacement would really outperform my older mouse.
The one my relative had really sucked, but like I said; I don't know much about mouses.
I read a lot about what I want to buy, and I don't buy anything without reading and comparing customer reviews first.
This mouse has already been praised into heaven; million times before me.

Good day.

What an OC-ed mouse/USB/PS2 ports will ever do as far as overall performance is concern?
Enlighten me please.

I kinda have to lol at the whole mouse OC thing.

lol

What about me trying to overclock my keyboard. LOL

Overclocking my sound card and Ethernet Card. heh.

I got my mouse. Newegg is ****in fast. Might be my location. I get 1-2 day delivery from these guys.

The mouse feels right. Didn't install the software yet. At the highest dpi, it is just fast enough. Feels pretty good overall. Hate the battle damage design though. As long as this mouse has been out, I can't wait anymore for a new design. Maybe next time.

Mouse pointer moves very smmoooooth.

Gtg to work bye. (BTW I got the Logitech MX-518)

I'd install the software and driver package if i were you. Driver updates etc often include updates for tracking on different surfaces etc.

I'd install the software and driver package if i were you. Driver updates etc often include updates for tracking on different surfaces etc.

I hadn't heard that before, but yeah, I might try it, if not only temporarily, becuase the switch document button feature sounds great, but if I don't need that feature and I don't see any other features that make it worth it, then I'll uninstall it. It doesn't have any problems what-so-ever tracking on my mouse pad.

BTW I have an extra large WOWPAD mousepad, and it's the greatest mousepad I've ever used. had it for a while, it never wears out, it's slick as teflon, and it's about as thin as they come. It's also very economically priced. Look it up next time you need a mousepad, and check out comparison reviews first.

WindowsXP installs a default driver, and this mouse prides itself on requiring no drivers to be able to use most of it's features. You know why? Well, my old microsoft mouse that I uninstalled was 11.5 MB. I guess that's not a lot, but mouse drivers often tinker with the mouse speeds, sometimes making them skip pixels and things, to make the cursor move faster.

Well, I don't know how much memory the default mouse driver for WinXP uses, but it can't be much, and well, the mouse works perfectly.

I just got done trying the mouse in a game for the first time. My job takes up so much of my time. I am happy to say that the mouse works perfectly. I leave it on 1600dpi, and adjust mouse speed through the in game menus as many hardcore gamers recommend. It just couldn't get any better. This mouse is perfect (I don't like the hologram finish though *barf*)

I highly recommend it, to anyone, to replace any other mouse, for any reason. It has all the features you could want and more I should think, and the performance is incredible. It is also so comfortable, that I don't ever have to rest my hand, like I did with my old mouse. It's just flawless.

I did a 180 turn in FEAR, moving the mouse seemingly instantaneous, twitching my wrist with a speed the human eye couldn't see (LOL), and there were no weird movements. The on-screen environment turned exactly at the speed, even when I moved it as fast as I couldm, and my aim stayed right where I told it to go.

With my cheap old MS mouse (comfort mouse 3000), there was a maximum speed the mouse could detect (which, was pretty low, and I hate to say is pretty common), and beyond that, the mouse wouldn't know what happened, and the aim reticule could end up anywhere, even up at the sky or my feet. Also, there was negative acceleration, meaning, the mouse cursor could only move so fast, then it would actually move slower, no matter if I would increase the mouse movement speed.

It was a lot of boring, time consuming research, but I'm glad I ended up with a hell of a lot better mouse than the Fatality 2020, as far as what most people say about it.

Thanks for the recommendation Brick, I really like the mouse.
:D
