In the new IGN Video Interview with Gabe, Gabe confirms the release dates for Episode 2, the various purchase methods and his favourite TF2 moments.
Episode 2 goes to retail in the US on October 10th and only Orange Box will be available.
Episode 2 goes to retail in the UK and Europe on October 12th and only Orange Box will be available.
Episode 2 goes to Steam world wide at 12:01am on October 10th and there will be multiple purchase plans.
Assuming Gabe means 12:01am EDT, this translates around the world as:
10:01 pm (October 9th) in California
5:01 am (October 10th) in the UK
3:01 pm (October 10th) in Sydney
This pretty much clears up what we were all asking and it looks as if Steam users will be able to purchase just the Black Box or even just Episode 2 if they want to miss out on some amazing stuff. Gabe also mentioned a multiplayer pack in the interview so I imagine there will be some sort of CSS, DOD, TF2 pack available for people who just want the MP games. The reason Black Box was pulled off retail is apparently because retailers fought back saying they didn't have enough shelf-space to stock two different versions of the same game and Valve were more insistent on having everything in one box.
The interview link is below for all who wish to see it, there are a couple of very small new snippets of video that I hadn't seen before, one showing Alyx shooting from behind a counter with bottles on it and some of TF2.
