New Jersey lawmakers on Thursday became the first in the nation to abolish the death penalty since the Supreme Court restored it in 1976. Opponents of capital punishment hope the state's action may prompt a rethinking of the moral and practical implications of the practice in other states.

New Jersey's Democratic-controlled General Assembly voted 44 to 36 on Thursday to repeal the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without parole. The action followed a similar vote by the state Senate on Monday. Gov. Jon S. Corzine, a Democrat and a death penalty opponent, has said he will sign the legislation.

The repeal bill follows the recommendation of a state commission that reported in January that the death penalty "is inconsistent with evolving standards of decency." But equally persuasive to lawmakers was not saving lives but money -- it costs more to keep a prisoner indefinitely on death row than incarcerated for life.

It does cost more to keep a prisoner on death row than in jail for a life sentence.

You know what costs less than a life sentence? Rope.

I'm fine with them repealing it. It doesn't change my views on the death penalty, since I'm still pro death penalty, but I'd be completely okay with even every state banning it if that's how the laws are made.

I hope this is the first step on the path to all the other states pulling their collective head out of their ass and abolishing it permanently.

I hope you're right ...even though there hasnt been a state to repeal it since it was reinstated in 1976

yes but you missed the point entirely
I didn't miss the point. I expressed my opinion to your question. I am in favor of the death penalty, hence I do not agree with their repealing of the death penalty. And if the reason was monetary, there are ways to keep the death penalty costs down.

Refer to my initial post.

method of execution does not factor into the price of imprisoning someone in death row ..which is part of their justification:

equally persuasive to lawmakers was not saving lives but money -- it costs more to keep a prisoner indefinitely on death row than incarcerated for life

method of execution isnt the problem here, monetary wise

also the state commissions recommendation that it be repealed because it is barbaric (paraphrased)

Id say the stone age had a better way of dealing with murderers. Stone to head.

Cost = $0
Effectiveness = 95/100

so ..you're saying countries like Saudi Arabia are more advanced than the US?

:O

But they still have 5 HP! A magic missile should finish them off, but that has a cost of 3 manas

Uhhh...they haven't carried out an execution anyone since 1963...

Further, they have 8 prisoners on death row...all from the 90's...

This is a state that clearly doesn't agree with execution...this abolishment is just making official what's been known for a long time. But, I'm sure this will be made into a big enough ordeal.

I do not agree with the death penalty being abolished entirely. HOWEVER, I feel that it should only be used in extremely rare circumstances. HENCE, I thought NJ was handling it well enough...clearly this is where cost is an issue...keeping psychos on death row, etc...that said, again, they only had 8....whatever.

have you SEEN the south?

touche, my good man, well played /golf clap

edit, what the hell is wrong with these forums? every goddam special character ends up being replaced with a "?", Munro hasnt payed his special characters bill or what? touche is supposed to have an accent on the end

Don't hate on the South unless you live here.

I'll set Tr0n on you.

Stern, you were fully aware this would immediately become another capital punishment debate thread. You wily bastard, I can almost see you cackling maniacally while posting it, albeit quietly so as not to disturb your coworkers. The guy passing behind your cubicle on the way to get coffee is curious as to why you were rubbing your hands gleefully while staring at the computer screen, by the way.

I disagree with capital punishment for two primary reasons. First, I do not believe that the State/Government should have the right to execute people. Permanent incarceration is quite enough power. Second, our justice system sucks and there is no doubt that people have been executed wrongly, which is frankly a travesty of justice I can't compare to anything else.

I say we start judging people guilty until proven innocent.

Execution should only apply to people convicted of arson in royal dockyards. The cads.

guilty as charged ..however my coworker went on lunch so the cackling was out loud :cheese:

agreed

I'm going to go off topic here and ask, what kind of work do you do anyways?

Potentially derailing a thread that will inevitably descend into flames and chaos? Unthinkably evil.

must every single thread I post descend into a discussion about me? no really, cuz my ears are constantly burning ..I've mentioned what i do for a living several times ..a few times to you directly. lets switch this up for a change, why dont we? what do YOU do for a living/with your life? you seem to here as much as I am

What are your ears like anyway Stern? mmmm I'd love to just nibble on them... oh yeah

too far?

Sheesh. I don't remember you ever telling anybody what you do for a living, and you always mention surfing while at work so I was genuinely curious.

Drink some cranberry juice or something, geez.

As for me, I don't do anything for a living. I'm unemployed. I'm trying to fix my life for the better by learning a real skill I can utilize, object oriented programming in particular.

riiight, I mentioned it as early as yesterday ..and yes I have replied to you specifically about what I do .....but you avoided my question, what do you do for a living, surely that's far more interesting seeing as how I've mentioned what I do dozens of times

Stern, you're a web designer or something, aren't you?

Don't look at me the wrong way, I usually don't read politics threads and when I do I only read the posts of people I disagree with...

I already edited my post, detailing that. And I don't remember ever asking you about what you do for a living, I seriously don't. I have problems with short term memory as of late, so that could be why, or the fact I didn't ask you. I don't know.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't know what you do. I bet whatever you say will be completely foreign to me and not be something I can recall hearing before.

Maybe you can just provide to me a link to where you recently posted what you do, because I don't recall seeing a post that you say was recent. That'll suffice.

EDIT: found it. http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showpost.php?p=2485177&postcount=30

Yeah... I had no idea that's what you did. I would have guessed specialized data entry and management or something. Interesting stuff.

Oh, and drink that cranberry juice. You didn't have to snap at me like that for an honest question.

I'm asked that almost every goddam day ..and not because the person is genuinely curious it's because they're trying to take a jab at my post count and that I "have nothing better to do" ...anyways I'm sick of having to explain my presence here on a continual basis

As you're one of the few people on these boards that makes sense on a post-by-post basis, I'm interested - why are you in favour of capital punishment?

You never have to explain your presence. **** what other people say, usually it's in good nature anyways. You don't have to answer to anybody though and explain yourself.

When I asked, I was genuinely curious what you did for a living.

well you cant blame me for thinking otherwise especially because of our checkered past/present

btw your reasoning wasnt as innocent as you suggest

considering our past and present relationship and going on the tone of the conversation ennui and I were having, I can extrapolate that the implication here/that the next thing you would have said was "what job do you have because it seems ideal; you're paid to surf" ...it may seem like a stretch and could be innocuous but in my defense had Ennui asked me that same question I would have happily replied in a non defensive way ...so that says something

btw it's bad enough that I'm consistantly asked about my inflated postcount/the amount of time I spend here but to top it off I have to rehash, in minute detail, everything that was said leading up to the point where the post count issue reared it's ugly head ..it's really not that big of deal, people need to get over it especially when I can point to that same person and rightfully say "what are you doing with your life? I have a career, my own family, a house; I'm established ..shouldnt YOU be concerned with what you're doing with your life? why are you spending time on a video game site/playing video games when you have yet to establish your life?

to be fair this last part isnt really aimed at you but it's more of an attempt to finally answer the question that so often comes up ...bottom line is it's really no ones business ...anyways can people stop asking me that? if not, dont blame me if I tear you a new one :)

maybe I'll ask the mods to reset my postcount at 29,999 ..wont that be a pisser? :E

I think it's all a matter of being the person in number 1 spot of having the most posts, not because it's you. One of those things that comes with the turf.

Execution should only apply to people convicted of arson in royal dockyards. The cads.

Small problem, in the UK it is no longer permitted to execute those cads anymore (or anyone else for that matter), due to certain EU treaties banning the death penalty within the union.

It's a great shame that the US still has the death penalty. Those sort of punishments belonged in the middle ages, but in our, so called, civilized world.

It's barbaric and inhumane, and the sooner it's banned worldwide, the better.

Is this a step towards the USA becoming properly civilized? I hope so.

Seriously though, it's good to see that some are making progress. Even though they're some two centuries late. ;)
