According to Tom's Hardware the new Nvidia NV38 and NV36 will be making their debut in a few weeks. This is good news for Nvidia fans, as the new cards will *hopefully* have much better DX9 peformance.

Tom's Hardware:
What's next? In the following weeks we can expect new cards from NVIDIA, based on its code-named NV38 and NV36 processors, and ATI will present the RV360 alias Radeon 9600 XT later this month.

Hopefully this means we might see HL2 earlier than we expected if Nvidia's poor performance was infact the primary reason for the delay.

nope, it will be faster then the 5900ultra I grant you that, but not by much, there is no core change what so ever, its just the 5900ultra with a faster core+memory, so it still has the weak dx9 parts in it. so there won't be any "automagicly fix"

and nvidias poor performance isnt the cause of the delay, the game just isnt done yet!

You could be right, if the new Nvidia cards are only a small upgrade (similar to 9800XT v. 9800PRO). However, I think Nvidia has know for a long time now that the FX line was fk'd for DX9 and have been working overtime to make something that is closer to ATI performance.

I just hope this will get HL2 to us a little bit quicker. I'm glad I went with ATI.

no, I can say with 100% that it won't be a great leap over the 5900u. for the simply fact they named it 5950u, OOO 50 up in the name, if it was a larger leap at all, it would be 6000u, or higher.

oh and Nvidia has knowen for well over a YEAR that there cards performed like crap in dx9, they knew this back when they brought out the 5800. (hence that whole 3dmark is wrong and bad BLAH BLAH" thing from nivida when it showed they had poor performance.

That's what Gabe says, but what do you expect him to say if it were true? 'We delayed the game cuz Nvidia sucks and paid us off to wait.' I think not.

I started a thread about this conspiracy theory, which you might or might not have read, but it shows my reasoning on the issue.

Keep in mind that this is only a theory, but it is logical if you think about it.

i don't buy it, nvidia can only increase their hl2 performance by releasing drivers that lower IQ, even their upcoming card won't be much better because it's just a respin of the same core, with higher speeds, it still won't have the DX9 performance that ati has.

and they're not going to be able to put off the HL2 release until NV40 is released, so really it makes no difference.

Correct. The NV36/38 cards are based on the NV35 core (Which means: Same hardware rendering capabilities). NV36 = Budget, whereas NV38 = Performance. The only difference between the NV35 (5900 Ultra) and NV38, is going to be clock speeds.

NV38 = 500Mhz GPU / 1000Mhz Mem.

:)

core has been lowered to 475, memory is still the same I belive.

My question is. with these releases will the prices of the

9600 pro
and
fx 5600
go down in price? please god i hope so i dont want to spend that much on a new card with what i got in my comp already...lol i can feel my temptation getting worse and worse!

I think all the current lineup of cards will drop in price.
}Edit: the 9600xt will cost $200 so the 9600pro lowers to $150 and such.

i doubt that has little to do with how much a jump in performance it is. they could name it w/e the hell they want

its better that you buy radeon card 9600 PRO its cheap and its best for the price :)

yea, but im on a geforce 4 ti 4200 128 mb...would i see much of a difference from that to a 9600 pro? or...dare i say...a 9600pro xt?

Anandtech seem to have benchies of the nv38. Not sure though, I haven't read the whole thing.

edit:
Lots of good stuff in there. Apparently, ATi claim that the 9600XT will beat a 9700pro in every aspect.

Yes it is. Steam is the primary reason for delay.

w0w really?

My 9700 only has 276 memory

Yeah, I was quoting older information, when the board was displayed at a trade show last week. It said 500/1000.

Obviously, Nvidia lowered the freq's a bit.

yes, you'd be able to play with directx9 with 9600/9600xt.

cant say that with your 4200

people the next tech jump next year will be 8500 to 9500 in difference. the cards coming now are more of the same with tweaks.
