Hey all

Just got a new PSU, a Turbine Power 450w w/active PFC by aerocool. I put it in, wired it up, pressed the button and was greeted by a horrible sound, which sounds like a fan scraping on something, I'm fairly sure its coming from the PSU.

I've checked all the other fans (CPU/GPU/case etc) and none appear to be catching, but of course I can't see inside the PSU to know for sure whats causeing it.

Along with this, the harddrive light comes on and stays full on and the monitors stay blank.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the main boards power connection. I have the 20 pin connection and the additional 4 pin connection, however, the exra 4 pin on the new PSU does not fit the 4 pin socket on the board. However, I was under the immpression that this socket was only there for backwards compatibility with old PSUs. Or is that total gibberish?

Anyway, any ideas, anyone had this before? Specs in sig btw.

*Edit - Ok, just tried again, and the extra 4 pin does fit, however, when I plug it in, the computer will not turn on at all, and when I turn the PSU switch off and on again, it does not briefly flicker (PSU has built in light). However, with just the 20 pin plug in, it turns on, but then behaves as I have described above.

Just to make sure you know...
All powersupplies today should come with a square 4pin connection to the board. It usually has a plastic clip on the side to hold it in place. With all these new powersupplies with 24pins, a lot of them make it 20pin + 4pin (bundled together) in case you have a 20pin board. Don't confuse those 2 4pin connectors! They go in different places.

If you have a 20pin powersupply without that bundled 4pin then you shouldn't worry. The 4pin plug with the clip should fit the seperate connector on the board.

Hopefully it's just the fan making the noise. =p
Move some wires around if its a case fan so they do not rub. If it's a psu fan then i might recommend returning it for a new one. You could open it up but that would void any warrenties on it.

Sorry, must be tired, but I'm not quite understanding that. Are you saying the 4 pin plug, the one that is clipped to the side of the 20 pin plug, should or should not be used in the 4 pin socket?

*Edit - Ok, have at least figured out the noise, its a fan in the PSU making the noise, so I don't think thats the problem.

Good that ya found that out.

Ok, well, its now working. I was using the wrong plug for the 4 port (ATX 12V) socket. Also, the buzzing was a fan catching on something, as when I moved the wires that were compressed between the PSU and the DVD writer at the front, the buzzing stopped.

What a pallaver just to change a PSU over eh?

cheers for your help Asus
