New Radeon 3870

I need some help on this one. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Radeon HD 3870. I'm currently running a Radeon x700, so the upgrade is long overdue. The problem is that the new 3870 cards are PCIe 2.0; I know that you can use an old PCIe 1.1 card in a new 2.0 slot, but can you do the opposite? In other words, can I use a new PCIe 2.0 card in and old 1.1 slot?

PCI-E 2.0 is backwards compatible with PCI-E 1.1

I would really recommend an Nvidia 8800GT instead of the HD 3780 though. They're about the same price, but the 8800GT offers quite superior performance

I wouldn't neccessarily say that. Do some homework in terms of benchmarks, because different games and software (video editing, HD) have different performance. As to your original question, Sedako is correct. Even though you won't achieve the max performance of 2.0, the card will fit and work fine.

Since he's asking this question on a gaming site, i'm assuming he's going for gaming performance. I have done my homework, and the 8800GT is significantly better than the HD 3870 in most benchmarks:

This was the only benchmark where the HD 3870 beat the 8800GT by a significant margin:

Most of the tom's hardware charts also have the 8800GT beating the HD 3870 handsomely.
