This week I'll be ordering my new rig. The set-up:

Asus A8N-SLI nForce4
AMD Athlon64 3500+
DDR *PC3200* 1Gb
Maxtor 250GB 16MB 7200r SATA
Club3D X800XL Vivo PCI256MB
DVD Burner Liteon 16x DL
Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS
Logitech Media Keyboard
Razer DiamondBack 1600dpi Chame

Plus some peripherals like coolers and stuff.

Have I forgotten anything or should I change anything IYO?

EDIT I'm keeping my monitor, so that's not on the list.

What about a case and a powersupply? Other than that, you will just need the usual stuff for building systems, termal paste for the CPU, screws, motherboard risers etc. Also make sure you get some decent fans for inside the case to keep stuff nice and cool.

I've got that covered. That what I meant with the peripherals. Besides, I'm not building it myself. I have two left hands, as we say in Holland. :rolling:

Heh, You should help build it I think. There is nothing more satisfying than building your own pc!

I'll leave the building to the experts. I am a bit too clumsy to pull something like that off. I'll do my own upgrading tho. I've done that in the past (changing videocard / adding RAM / replacing DVD burner), and that went fine. Thanks for your faith in my technical expertise tho.

isn the SLI motherboard for nVidia cards? cuz i would get 2 Geforce 6800s on that machine.

Ati don't haven't released their sli technology yet. So one, you wouldn't be able to add a second to that motherboard as it is an nvidia chipset designed for running 2 nvidia cards in sli ultimately. I'm not sure whether it would be ok with that card on its own. But i would recommend that if you want an sli motherboard in your system then get a pci express sli 6800 or 6800 GT

Yes you should switch motherboards there's no point in having an sli motherboard if you have an ati card, and switch the mouse to the logitech mx518. It's 1600 dpi and many of the features work even without the drivers installed. It's got a dpi switch that works without the drivers, it's also more comfortable and it looks better .

Being that you're probably going to be mainly playing HL2 and such, switch the mobo to the non SLI version of that card. ATI has no SLI technology yet as already said. Also I agree with holydeadpenguins, get a new mouse. I have an MX510 and love it. Everything else looks good.

EDIT: What manufacturer are you buying the memory from? I only trust Corsair, Kingston, etcetera.

Razor wont give you any of it's features without drivers installed. The razor has very badly placed buttons, and it looks bad. The mx518 offeres dpi switching, more buttons and the dpi switch can be customized.

Thanks for all the replies. The Razer is staying tho! The MX518 looks pretty cool, but I like the Diamondback better.

I coulda sworn a hot woman is pretty satisfying but I guess building a PC is better....not

But why???? The mx518 overpowers the diamondback in all areas, in sensitivity, the feet are even slicker than teflon and it has more buttons that are hard to accidentally press.

That's actually a pretty cool mouse. How does that flipping thru different DPI's work?

Um botht the diamondback and the mx518 can switch dpi, but you have to do it through software with the diamondback. The switching lets you turn down the sensitivity so that when you are sniping you can move slower or if you hear someone you can turn it all the way up and just flick your wrist and shoot him.

Surely for one, it is all relative. They are both leagues ahead of your average mouse, therefore he's hardly hard done by with that mouse. Secondly, i have a razor diamondback, and paired with a good mousing surface, it glides as if it were floating on a cloud, whilst also being incredibly accurate. Can't say fairer than that. In the end, it's all down to personal preference, i happen to like the slightly over the top, tvr-esque paintjob on mine, and think the logitech mice are a touch unsightly.

He will be fine with his razor.

Me likes over the top! :burp:

well, in the grand scheme of all of those things he will be ordering, i doubt he's going to notice that too much

:E

Change your video card to a 6800 ultra. Or If you want to keep ATI card, change your motherboard, its pointless to get SLI mobo with ATI Card, thus go Nvidia. And Get 6800 ultra. And Later on you can get another one.

I'm going to the store in a couple of hours and I got a quick question: it seems that the X800XL is out of stock. Cards in the same price class that are available are the X800Pro and the 6800GT. Which one would you pick? I wanna go for the 6800GT coz it has 16 pixel pipelines (in stead of the X800Pro's 12). The other specs are basically the same. Good choice?

NB I know the X850XT or 6800 Ultra are better cards, but they're a bit too expensive. So please just choose between the X800Pro and the 6800GT.

OK, I'm a happy camper. My rig will be ready at the end of the month. This is it:

Asus A8N-SLI
AMD Athlon 3500+
AC Freezer64
2x Asus N6600GT
2x Dual Channel 512MB
Maxtor 250GB 16MB SATA
NEC ND-3540 16xR/8xDL
Razer Diamondback (chame)
Logitech Media Keyboard

And that's all packed in a sleek black midi-tower with 400 watts of juice.

I'm as happy as a geek can be!

EDIT I didn't get the 6800GT coz it was sold out. The double 6600's are a good and cool alternative if you ask me.

Umm wrong..... The 6600gts will often just stay at the performance levels of a single 6600gt. 6600s in sli will actually be much slower than a single 6800gt or x800xl. SLI is far from perfect.

The final verdict of the review you mentioned:

The Guru of 3D said:
So concluding our complex verdict, compared to a GeForce 6800 GT the Dual 6600 GT SLI setup does not really offer a massive advantage. But from a budget point of view this form of scalability might be a really good option for you. The real guru's simply would go for a 2x GeForce 6800 GT/Ultra setup (which we really hope to review some day).

For me personally however it once again all boils down to what I call the X-factor. The first thing that people wanted to look at once they enter our lab is the SLI setup. The technology is of course fantastic to see. Imagine a nice brushed aluminum, watercooled, case-modded gaming rig. That's what it all is about isn't it? The X-factor and not just gaming per-se.

Like I said, it's also a cool alternative.

What is wrong is that I forgot an audio-card. Better make a call and ask 'em to add on of those Soundblaster Audigy 2's.
