Holy crap if thats what this turns out to be, I may piss myself... I am a huge sega fan

RUMOR #1: At E3, Sega will announce it is getting back into the console business.

Source: An e-mail blast inviting press to Sega's "mystery event" at E3.

The official story: "SEGA cannot comment on rumors relating to its exclusive press event on day one of E3. SEGA remains excited about its powerful lineup of yet-to-be announced titles."--Sega spokesman.

What we heard: Ever since Dreamcast production ceased in 2001, the console's diehard fans have held out hope that it would rise from the ashes. This week, hope came in the form of a one-paragraph press invitation to Sega's E3 presentation. "Learn about SEGA's 2004 line-up and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess," read the invite, which promised "explosive news--something even YOU won't be able to guess!" (Emphasis in the original). Within minutes, Sega loyalists were churning out messianic predictions of a new and improved Dreamcast. "Financially revitalized, finally debt-free, Sega now firmly believes it has what it takes to rule the roost," read one. But before you break out the straightjackets, consider this: Amusement-machine giant Sammy is Sega's majority stockholder, and its president Hajime Satomi is Sega's chairman. This year, Sammy's new Atomiswave arcade platform will replace the veteran NeoGeo format. The NeoGeo also came in a home console version which had a customer base fanatical enough to shell out hundreds of dollars per game--in other words, a proven (if small) market. The Atomiswave's hardware is even more compact than the NeoGeo's. Sammy has announced Sega will focus on developing games for the Atomiswave. Could Sega's big announcement be a new, Sega-branded home console based on the Atomiswave? Or is all this much ado about nothing?

Bogus or not bogus?: Although it's an intriguing theory, it's probably bogus. Note to Sega: kudos for making one publicity e-mail go a long way.

Oh my god, Sega is the best company in the world, i love them! I really hope that they will start making consoles. I'll never forget the ad for NiGHTS: Into Dreams... take that silly ps1! bwhaha.

Wow, that would be awsome! A console slightly better then the ps2 and xbox with AWSOME games!

That'd be great.. although I'm not big into consoles, I was always sad to see Sega bite the dust, playing Sega games on different consoles just feels wrong

Sega is the console company I have the fondest memories of...

I'm still a big fan of Sonic... :E

sonic owns, even now. not that ive played the 3D games or anything- but i am considering buying SB2 for my cube on players choice.

but i dont think a console will be released... theyre still getting up from when the dreamcast tripped up and splattered its brains over the cold, hard floor of reality.

WTF did i just say? "reality"? wtf!

Pls let this be true!!!

The DC still ownz the PS2 - best party console ever \o/

I heard something a while back about a sega 'uber console' in the making, must have been over a year ago, but aparently it was a black box with specs to drool over, and wasnt due to be released for 2-3 years...

maybe this is the same thing?

you know how sega likes to be able to port directle from arcades to their consoles....well, sega recently teamed up with powerVR to make their new graphics chip, for arcades....so maybe....

I don't really care either way...but I'll still contribute.
If they do make a new console, it may fail like the DreamCast did, Microsoft and Nintendo alreay have liscenced Sega's Sonic and other games so maybe it would fall in the markets.

Fail to deliver like the Dream Cast did!!??

It may not have sold well - but it certainly delivered. One of the best consoles ever made imo ....... infact still the best party console there is, appealing to all ages and both genders. Dance mats and drunk girls = 'phwoar, look at the top bollox on that' Not to mention the sublime experience that Samba De Amigo is.

Best for 2d fighters too :)

Sega loves to test out new things... even if its not the best thing to do... and I love their attitude :)

*Coughs and points to Dreamcast's modem*
Remind anyone of a certain other system?

...i dont get it

There was some major commotion whent he X-Box was released with a modem packed in, and a lot of people since have given it all kinds of accolades for doing that.
But the entire idea was actually pioneered by the Dreamcast several years before the X-Box even came out. Sega has always been a little ahead of the game, but unfortunately that always seems to work against them.

DC processed more poly/sec then ps2 and came with a modem... the control was GODLY and probably the most comfortable thing ever to grace a console... the games were the best part though... Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, Jet Grind Radio, Phantasy Star Online... the list goes on ....

same here.....

I was always a sega fanboy....and everyone else was in to NES

Yes this is all true, but Sega cant go head up with the huge companys like Microsoft and Sony. Even Nintendo is having a hard time, they just dont have the funds to pack the serious hardware into a box like the huge companies do. So if Sega did come back, this would be the perfect time, sort of as a bridge console. Come back after all these consoles have been out for a few years, when their hardware is outdated with something new. Dreamcast was a bridge console, it bridged the gap between the Playstation and the PS2 & XBOX.

Its actually a nice niche market, they could release a new console with better graphics then anything out now because all that hardware is now outdated. This is actually what I believe Nintendo will do in the future, let SONY and Microsoft duke it out, then drop a console when their at their weakest, 3, 4, 5 years after launch. So if Sega plans to do the same...it will end up like it was in the good ol days...Sega vs Nintendo.

This is nothing but great news for gamers.

its too late for a bridge console, sony and microsoft are probably going to debut their new systems at e3 and release next year....consoles go for about 5 years until their next generation...so they're almost due

A) Shame on you Letters
B) Nintendo actually is in a completely safe position in the console war right now. They have more cash in their pockets than Microsoft by far, and are prepared to be in it for the long run. Nintendo made their hardware intelligently so that they make money with each and every one they sell, and don't have to recoup everything with people buying games. Add on top of that that Nintendo's first party software sells exceptionally well and I wouldn't count them out anytime soon.

They're gonna make amazing games for the PS2, XBox and GC - then only release the sequals on their new console!!!!! Everyone will buy it and Sega will rule the world!!!111 ahahahahahaha

I hate Xbox and PS2, so anything that challenges them gets my support. Plus Sega are the only company to make a console that I own and like.

I read a great april fools joke in Super Play (Swedish gaming mag), about Microsoft and Sega teaming up for the next console. It was awesome, such a cool idea!

Realizing it was a spoof made me cry... ;(

well not really, but you get the idea..

btw, I own a Dreamcast, it rules!

No nintendo and sega going together, that would be awsome, i find them to be more comparable than sega and microsoft or sony. Their first party games rock, (sonic mario)

Playstation 3 isnt coming out until 2006-2007 and XBOX is the same. These are official statements so Sega could have a good 3 years.

As far as Nintendo, they are out with a second class console now! That system cant compete in sales with the XBOX and PS2, they just plain dont have the money to develop consoles. This is the exact reason Nintendo concentrates on kid games, its a niche market that requires less money to create the games and XBOX and SONY arent blitzing with millions of dollars (yet).

okay, this is what the(*My) New Sega Console should be:
It would be:
DreamCast 2k5
Intel Penitum 4 8Ghz
ATI X800 PRO 1024 MB ram
1024 MB DDR ram
4 Controller ports
And DVD 72X drive

And the feature game would be Shinobi with even more kick-ass gameplay and graphics and more dynamic, fast-paced and sleek sword fightning abilities/stunts/moves.
:D:D:D:D!!!

An 8Ghz processor... A one gig graphics card... A 72x DVD drive... and only one gig of RAM?

I have a dreamcast and no one can convince me that it has worse graphics than PS2.

While all the stuff about polycounts is questionable, the PS2 does beat it in its ability to have more calculations going on so that you can have more complex games that require that.
Even I'll admit that, and I'm a Dreamcast fanboy. :D
