New Steam update has been released last night, you can find the change log below. In addition, this release also includes a new Steam Hardware Survey, which is optional for all using Steam. Old Results may be found here. Or you can check the new survey here. Now for the change log :
  • Fixed preloaded versions of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare being unable to launch
  • Allow two shortcuts to use the same executable
  • Added ability to create desktop shortcuts for shortcut apps
  • Fixed Friends notifications being able to go top-most over the top of the tray context menu
  • Fixed case where games would only launch in English
  • Fixed Friends names sometimes being used for Clan names, or vice versa
  • Fixed a rare crash when attempting to install a game
  • Fixed Friends bug where the last Friend would not be shown
  • Fixed the tray context menu to be easily dismissed without actually making a menu selection

Restart your client to get the new update.

The number of DX10-capable systems has gone from 2 to 10 percent of users since May. - that's pretty illuminating.

Damn, I thought Steam bugged out and asked me to do the survey by mistake, so I said "No, thanks". Is there any way to run it now?

Wasn't there a Steam update a couple of days back?

It hasn't asked me to take part in the survey yet. D:

Damn they are pumping these updates out fast!

Yes. Yesterday in fact.

Still waiting for HDR...

I knew this would happen. Valve kept stating that none of their users were using DX10. They were not thinking into the future. Now everybody is using a 8800 card thanks to the 8800GT. The only reason nobody is running DX10 is because Vista runs poor. This should change rather quickly with the first service pack. Any future games made by Valve should fully use DX10. This goes for Left 4 Dead as well.

I dont think left4dead will, its to far into development. Maybe episode 3 tho.

I think Gabe has already stated that they are going to stick with DX9 because you can still get a lot out of it.

barely 20K responses so far, give it a few weeks before tangible results can be established.

I still haven't gotten asked for the survey. Weird.

Steam's insisting that it's temporarily unavaliable atm...

They should fix the one where it hangs for ages when updating, then crashes.

I'd like to see some sort of status console, to check what steam is actually doing. Sometimes when starting up, or just sitting there, it randomly sends/receives a dozen of MB's. Don't want to be paranoid, but what exactly is happening ? Is Steam updating server lists ? Checking for updates ? Sharing my porn stash ? God only knows.

Would help to diagnose a lot of connectivity issues too.

Don't be so ignorant. Even the people who have 8800s don't actually have DX10 yet due to the price of Vista

Lol, add up the the number of users with a dx10 card that's listed. It's around 20% at the moment of writing. Only 8% of users have vista with a dx10 capable card.

Not even half.

I fall about average in most of those. Feel good that I have almost 500GB free hdd space though :D.

Personally I agree with Valve that dx10 isn't necessary as yet, but only as far as they use the Source engine in its current (or incrementally upgraded) form.

Looking at games such as Crysis, Half-Life 2 at least is looking mighty dated technology wise. I still think it looks great, but there's no denying Crysis level technology is the new standard, and even Episode 2 just doesn't have that technology.

Whenever Valve invests in a complete overhaul of the Source engine or builds a new engine, that's the time dx10 should be used fully. But until then the limitations of the current Source engine make dx10 a bit pointless.

I'm thinking DX10 will be implemented into the next arc. I.e. Half-Life 3, or whatever they call it.

Exactly what limitations are there that you speak of? If you're referring to the fact that Crysis stresses hardware better, that's just cause of the way they programmed it. I'm sure that if Valve wanted to, they could make Source run at 10fps on an 8800GT.
