I got Grand Turismo 4 the other day and was wondering if I’m playing it right. I started the “Grand Turismo” mode and bought a Honda Civic 98 Type R. I did the first 5 races in Begginer Events and then bought an engine upgrade. Im now doing the Japan events races to gain more money and get more upgrades. Is this how you supposed to play the game?? Im only asking coz its getting a bit repetitive, is there anything else to do??

The game is basically same game from the PS1, but it's no longer original or fun. You could consider it a GT1 mod, since everything is a mod to you. :P

It's boring and repetitive, you should sell it and get Forza Motorsport. I am being serious by the way.

So the way Im going through the game is the only way??

I don't really remember, I sold that game a long time ago. Did you try all of the game modes? Or is there only one? I can't remember, but you should know better than I.

Is this the first GT game you have played?

Yes its my first. I have GTR on PC but wanted "road cars" to race so bought this. Its a nice game so far, i like the feel of it.

Im gonna keep racing > get credits > buy upgrades > save up > buy a better car, then the circle of life starts again!!

After I bought my new enginer and driver terrain mods I went from comin 5th to 2nd!! The learning curve for this game is great

Thats basically it

enginer? engineer? oh, engine k. Driver terrain mods? oO What is that?

I think what you are describing is called a handicap, not a learning curve tbh.

If you really want the real deal, turn off all of the steering, breaking, and acceleration assists. That stuff is like training wheels.

Im only using the PS2 pad, i think turning all the aids off will make it rock hard! Driverterrain mods are like new clutches, gears, fly-wheels etc.

Im likin the game so far, just hope the cars all handle differently and dont just LOOK different

drivetrain..

gtr is far harder.

Do u mean GTR on the PC? Yeah that is hard without the assists on. BUT I wanted to drive road cars thats why I bought GT4. Shame no Ferraris, Porsches and Lambos though :(

there are rufs which are modified porsches, but they handle like shit imo.

How can they put like 300 cars in that game and not have Ferrari, Lambo, or Porsche? That's why Forza owns GT4

Apparently Ferrari were asking $10 million for the license so they said "wed rather spend money in making the game better". Its a shame coz GT4 doenst seem complete with Ferraris and Porsches :(

Hopefully GT5 on PS3 will have them. Whats the best way of tweaking my Honda Civic 98 Typre R to improve its conering handling i.e. I can go faster through corners??

lol
didn't know what you were gettinng yourself into eh?
the game is a driving simulator, not an arcade/action
precise driving and tuning are the highlight of the series

I could never get into the Gran Turismo series. I played 1 and 2, got bored. I have 3, haven't gotten into it. It's boring.
I played the demos when GT4 was out, it was utter rubbish.

And I am a hardcore racing game fan.

Burnout ftwx10.

Get http://www.liveforspeed.net for the most realistic car sim. It has a wide range of cars.

If you buy the Gran Turismo 4 logitech wheel, you can use it for the PS2 and for the PC. It's about £60 nowadays.

I have liveforspeed, its still in its ALPHA stages isnt it? Its a good game, but I wanna play on my BIG tv rather than mt 17" TFT, thats why I bought GT4. Im not sure about gettin a wheel, does it really make a difference??

No you're not. See below

Nice game, but not harcore by any means. Hardcore race fans play GT, forza, maybe even DTM racedriver.

The wheel makes a big difference on LFS because there aren't any analog buttons on PC joypads I don't think, so the throttle will be 100% or 0%, unless you use the analog stick for the throttle which I find hard. Using the wheel knocked about 4 seconds off my best lap so far.

I don't think the wheel makes a huge difference with GT4 since the PS2 controller has analog buttons, but it should still make you go a bit faster.

Only worth getting one if you're a simulation junkie :smoking:

That's kind of your opinion. :|
You can't say I'm not a hardcore racing fan just because I don't play GT.

I race in real life and the "realism" in GT makes it fricking boring.
My favorite series, which I benchmark everything on, is Need For Speed. Awesome long running series.

I'm with Virus on this one, you need Forza Motorsport ... It's everything GT is, with a whole heap extra. It's far from repetative! Graphics are much nicer too...

But, you should buy an xbox360 and wait for Forza Motorsport 2 - it's guaranteed to blow your socks off. :D

What realism? Its dumbed down so anyone can play it with a pad. Ive never spun out in gran turismo and im not particularly good at it.
In gtr, accelerate half a second too early coming out of a bend, or in a high powered car just floor it from a standstill, and youre facing the wrong way.. that just doesnt happen in gran turismo.
Lfs is rubbish, or was when i played it like a year ago. Dunno about forza but i would guess its not too unlike gran turismo.

Notice I put "realism" in quotes. What I meant was they put so much effort into making it "simmy", it makes the experience of driving lose all qualities of arcade fun and feel that a series like Burnout has in spades.

When I first picked up GT4, I had some powerful car and was doing like 80 and smashed into a barrier as I couldn't take the corner.
First thing I didn't like was the feel of speed. There was none. At 80 in the game it feels like 20 on the road. Second thing was the barrier. It took no damage and neither did the car. Third thing was the handling. Massive power understeer does not equal realism. My car could have taken that corner, albeit with some abusive body roll and tire squeal.

Gran Turismo is the bee's ass.

I got the National A and B licence now. I got a crappy Pontiac Transam for my troubles but Its soooo slow! No point in using it in any events, the other cars are just too fast. Shall I sell it and buy upgrades for my Civic 98 Type R?

As for the realsim, Im happy with it. The cars do actually feel different, the FTO and MR2 for example.

I remember when they were working on GT2, I read in a magazine:

Fans were asking for realistic car damage. You know what Sony said? "No, we can't do realistic car damage because the car manufacturers don't like to see their cars all smashed up, and won't allow it". I was a fan of Sony. I believed them.

The truth is that they just don't want to spend the money, can't do it with their game engine, and/or don't know how to make the cars fall apart with panels and wheels coming off. Forza Motorsport for the Xbox has realistic car damage. Funny, manufacturers don't seem to have any problem with it after all, you damn liars. **** Sony.

Driving at 140 miles an hour, bouncing off of walls = Gran Tourismo

I can drive 220 miles an hour straight into a wall, put it in reverse, and still finish the race 30 laps ahead of the competition.

"The real driving simulator" my ****ing ass.

Oh my god, I can't wait for Forza Motorsport 2, so I drive real purpose-built sports/race cars like Ferrari and Lamborgini, instead of just economy and family cars with sport components.

No, it's a Microsoft game.

Will it be coming out on PC? I wanna play this now, sounds really good, a cross between NFS and GT4

Unfortunately, it's an Xbox/Xbox 360 exclusive, so there is no PC version.

What would u say is the PC or PS2 equivalent of Forza Motorsport?

The PC doesn't have a Forza/GT4 equivalent, which sucks.

But it does have the best sim in Live For Speed. I haven't played Forza, but I doubt it's physics/tyre wear/handling etc etc are even slightly as good as Live For Speeds.

It's only for hardcore fans though, since you'll NEVER finish 1st in a race online unless all the good racers crash.

I used to play LFS, bought a force feedback wheel for it and everything. I stopped playing it a few weeks after S2 though, the number of complete trolling assholes on every server increased exponentially.

I used to win a lot of races, and made my own race-winning setups. The problem with LFS is the ease in which a single troll can f*** the whole race up for everyone.

But thats the whole point of the game, even if its not actually very realistic (imo). There are lots of arcade racers.

I agree about the understeer. Iirc the dodge viper is the one car that doesnt have that problem.

they just dont want to 'waste' time making the damaged models when they could be making more cars, that way they can say gt has 700 cars or whatever (even though half of them are slight variations of other cars)..

Overall GTR is the best racing sim in my opinion. GT4 is good, but its not as realistic. The best thing about GT4 is that theres loadsa cars and they actually do drive differently. BUT no damage and tedious "Grand Turismo Mode" mean I only ever play it for an 1 hour then leave it, It gets really frustrating racing in the same race over and over again to get more Credits. If I try and race in a different competition, i get wasted coz all the cars have like 200BHP and mines only got 166BHP!!

I know ite meant to prolong the gaming time, but surley they could have made some other modes like a time trial, or hit all the cones within a time limit type races
