New To Mapping In HL Series

First of all I have watched video tutorials and learned quite a bit, but I would like to know what tutorials helped YOU when you were getting started. I've used the Unreal Tournament editor a few times, but besides that I have no mapping experience. I'm trying to make a city (and a few other little maps) for an upcoming comic of mine, so anything relating to citys would greatly help.

Also, I've been looking for prefabs and models for Half-Life 2 but haven't found any. Could anyone point me in the right direction for those?

Thats all for now. Looking forward to making some maps! :imu:

Oh hell.

Years ago. Many MANY years ago when Half Life 1 came out I discovered that it came with a map editor. Now, I had been a well versed veteran with 3D mapping, but I knew how to rock with FinalSun and FinalAlert.

So, I decided one day to start mapping. I googled "Half Life Mapping Tutorials" and, well. Most of the sites are down now, but I wish I could have my first maps back. I loved them oh so much.

And the rest is, well, history.

Now, for things relating to cities? Play Half Life 2 or some CSS city maps. Take screenshots of what you like and study the shit out of them. Also, Google Image Search is your friend.

Perfectly put :)

I never spent a lot of time trying to learn FinalSun/Alert, fun stuff though.

Thanks everyone. I've learned quite a bit ;) I'm gonna try and make a HL2:DM map before I move on to my project.

And thank you sixthree! The interlopers.net site was a BIG help ;)

Anytime buddy. PM me if you have any specific questions.

Another question. I've been searching for 30 mins and haven't found anything >.< How do I put custom textures to be used in the editor?

Put them in a folder in the materials folder of the game your mapping for.
For example HL2:
SteamApps\<accountname>\half-life 2\hl2\materials\yourmap

Works the same for any other source game.
