Hi. I'm new to game developing and I'm wondering if anyone could give me some advice or places to read that might kick start what I need to know for HL2. I've dabbled in level design for some of the Doom games and Duke3d but as you know those were some time ago.

Is there any good reference sites that I could read through to see what others know or advise that might be a good starting point? I've looked through the countless threads but I haven't seen much for the newb beginner.

I understand that the game isn't out and maybe people don't know exactly what's needed but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Would it really help to fire up Worldcraft 2.x and go through the various tutorials? I figured it would help and that it might get me up to speed with how level design works today. I just hope that it wouldn't teach me stuff that won't be useful for HL2.

If someone had no level and/or game design experience, and wanted to see what was involved from start to finish on doing that, would a Worldcraft tutorial be the 1st place you'd recommend they visit? Will that teach you a lot of the principals and theories involved with level design?

Yes! Experience is the best teacher. I find the best test is to map your own house :)

See here for additional mapping stuff.
