I've been closely examining the Aftermath screenshots released, and I came across something which caught my eye. I've brightened up a few of the screenshots, and discovered this symbol on the armour of one of the combine soldiers:
This is interesting, as the Combine Soldiers in Half-Life 2 did not have that symbol on their armour. That symbol could only be found on the Combine Elites. [PICTURE]
Also, the Combine Soldiers appear to have an olive-green uniform [PICTURE], as opposed to those in Half-Life 2, which had a gray uniform (soldiers) or dark blue (Prison Guards). The Soldiers also seem to be missing the insignia that appeared on their arm-guards during Half-Life 2. The hourglass [PICTURE] and the man sitting on the toilet [PICTURE], I beleive it was dubbed. Finally, the Combine Soldiers in Aftermath have orange eyes [PICTURE], as opposed to those in Half-Life 2, which had greenish-bluish (soldiers) and yellow (Prison Guards).
I don't know about you, but I definitely beleive that it's a new type of Combine Soldier. Of course, this raises the question about the abscence of these soldiers during Half-Life 2. I've cooked up a bit of a theory on that one. See, perhaps they were shipped in from another city as back-up troops - seeing as the resistance in City 17 grew so powerful.
Also, perhaps it's because of the lack of Combine troops in City 17, as Nova Prospekt (where humans were turned into Combine Soldiers and Stalkers) was destroyed, which meant that the production line of Soldiers and Stalkers would come to a complete halt (unless they were also produced in the Citadel, which I don't think, as razor trains departed to and from Nova Prospekt, which I interpreted as the shipping of humans to be turned into Soldiers and Stalkers, to then be shipped to the Citadel, rather than the humans being turned into Soldiers and Stalkers in the actual Citadel).
So obviously, during the entire course of the "revolution", and the week that Freeman and Alyx were away, every Soldier that the resistance killed would be very hard to replace, and thus the need for troops to be brought over from other cities, at the cost of that city being defenceless against a possible insurrection. Of course, these new troops didn't arrive in time, and that's why we're facing them now in Aftermath.
I also wonder about the rank of these "new" troops. They bear the symbol of the Elites, which tells me that they are highly ranked. Their armour also resembles that of the Elites, being grooved [PICTURE], rather than smoothe [PICTURE]. However, the Soldiers in Aftermath resemble the Combine Soldiers from Half-Life 2 more (having two eyes, rather than one, for instance), so I'd say that these Soldiers would be above the rank of a standard soldier and below the rank of an Elite (or maybe they are the Elites of another City?)
The elites themselves haven't changed, from what I can tell [PICTURE]. They still look the same as they did in Half-Life 2, and I don't think we've had any screenshots of Civil Protection released yet, so we can't comment on them yet (perhaps they've all been killed? )
Oh, and good job if you've read this far, it was a lengthy post.
