I've been closely examining the Aftermath screenshots released, and I came across something which caught my eye. I've brightened up a few of the screenshots, and discovered this symbol on the armour of one of the combine soldiers:

newcombineelite7ah.jpg

This is interesting, as the Combine Soldiers in Half-Life 2 did not have that symbol on their armour. That symbol could only be found on the Combine Elites. [PICTURE]

Also, the Combine Soldiers appear to have an olive-green uniform [PICTURE], as opposed to those in Half-Life 2, which had a gray uniform (soldiers) or dark blue (Prison Guards). The Soldiers also seem to be missing the insignia that appeared on their arm-guards during Half-Life 2. The hourglass [PICTURE] and the man sitting on the toilet [PICTURE], I beleive it was dubbed. Finally, the Combine Soldiers in Aftermath have orange eyes [PICTURE], as opposed to those in Half-Life 2, which had greenish-bluish (soldiers) and yellow (Prison Guards).

I don't know about you, but I definitely beleive that it's a new type of Combine Soldier. Of course, this raises the question about the abscence of these soldiers during Half-Life 2. I've cooked up a bit of a theory on that one. See, perhaps they were shipped in from another city as back-up troops - seeing as the resistance in City 17 grew so powerful.

Also, perhaps it's because of the lack of Combine troops in City 17, as Nova Prospekt (where humans were turned into Combine Soldiers and Stalkers) was destroyed, which meant that the production line of Soldiers and Stalkers would come to a complete halt (unless they were also produced in the Citadel, which I don't think, as razor trains departed to and from Nova Prospekt, which I interpreted as the shipping of humans to be turned into Soldiers and Stalkers, to then be shipped to the Citadel, rather than the humans being turned into Soldiers and Stalkers in the actual Citadel).

So obviously, during the entire course of the "revolution", and the week that Freeman and Alyx were away, every Soldier that the resistance killed would be very hard to replace, and thus the need for troops to be brought over from other cities, at the cost of that city being defenceless against a possible insurrection. Of course, these new troops didn't arrive in time, and that's why we're facing them now in Aftermath.

I also wonder about the rank of these "new" troops. They bear the symbol of the Elites, which tells me that they are highly ranked. Their armour also resembles that of the Elites, being grooved [PICTURE], rather than smoothe [PICTURE]. However, the Soldiers in Aftermath resemble the Combine Soldiers from Half-Life 2 more (having two eyes, rather than one, for instance), so I'd say that these Soldiers would be above the rank of a standard soldier and below the rank of an Elite (or maybe they are the Elites of another City?)

The elites themselves haven't changed, from what I can tell [PICTURE]. They still look the same as they did in Half-Life 2, and I don't think we've had any screenshots of Civil Protection released yet, so we can't comment on them yet (perhaps they've all been killed? :))

Oh, and good job if you've read this far, it was a lengthy post.

Yeah, I noticed the green-clothing when I first saw it, I posted it but the thread I posted it in died... yeah. Anyway, I hadn't noticed the symbol, mind. Cool find.

I know they a mutated humans but what about normal Humans that are maybe loyal to the Combine? Or refused to be tortued so joined them?

Yep, I saw that too when people first discovered it when the pictures got released. Interesting.

Nice post, sfc_hoot.

The Combine soldiers are biologically modified humans(hence the operating table in Nova Prospekt), who, either forcefully or willingly (remember the very first beginning of HL2?) have joined the Combine.

You can't be loyal to Combine, you can only be loyal to Our Benefactors, as the Combine is a pet of Our Benefactors. :E

And the only person loyal to those alien retards is Dr. Mossman. God I hate her.

EDIT: Nobody's been tortured but Stalkers (those puny workers we've sen in the Citadel).

P.S. Note the picture. Gotta love this part.

Funnily enough I just noticed this when looking at the PC Gamer Aftermath preview today. Either Valve has randomly decided to change the troop design (doesn't seem likely) or we're up against some sort of new, probably more advanced variant. They look like shock troops to me.

the combine soldiers r not human, they're a combine/human mix. That operating table was actually an autopsy, that was a dead combine. And humans who like the combine (or just want a decent meal) become civil protection. Read the guide. And also in Nova Prospekt i thought they only made the people into stalkers not combine too?

Combine too. You see a Combine soldier being modified on a monitor.

And even the Combine Soldiers are basically human. Human with biomechanical implants and possibly brainwashed as well, but still human at the core.

if u look on one of the cameras you can see a man with no shirt exept he is wearing the combine soldier leggings. They do make soldiers in Nova Prospect

sorry for posting what you said Sulkdodds i din't refresh before i wrote the message

i know this isn't on topic but how do you make moving avatars?!

No problem at all. :D Just use the edit button and don't triple post.
Moving avatars? With Flash or any gif editor. ;)

They are humans at the core. Humans infused with combine technology.

It looks like to me it's just a reskin of the Combine Soldier Model. :)

My theory is simple. The city's containment barrier is breached. The combine have lost control. They need to regain control. These troops are containment teams, trained especially in controlling an outbreak of Xen Organisms. Hence, the fact that a large squad has encircled and blasted the crap out of an antlion guard. Thats my opinion. Basically, think Combine Super Elites, with camoflauge designed for outdoor environments, and not indoor environments.
Now, this would give way to special weapons that are more efficient and accurate at killing Xen Organisms. But that's just my theory.
Human solidiers are modified with combine equipment but appear to be willingly loyal to the combine. Metrocops aren't modified, solidiers are more modified, and super elites are heavily modified (no two eyed mask as an example).
Stalkers are humans that are baically butchered up, and conditioned into combine slaves. Tortured till they obey.

Weren't Stalkers brainwashed? Remember when if Half-Life 2 you had a choice which pod to go in? If you chose the wrong one, you'd end up dead, but we saw a Stalker go through that thunder-like flow of electricity, and he survived. My best bet would be that's how they get brainwashed.

I seem to remember that no stalkers were going through that path toward the Electricity…
But anyway… speaking of brainwashing… it didn’t make it in the game but one of the overwatch radio announcements that you can get from the source sounds gcf says, “Reminder. Memory Replacement is the first step toward rank privileges.”

God I love this game.

Anyone notice this? Orange/yellow eyes + green/brown armour. Matches the Aftermath screens.

They'll use Cremators for that...

cremator

I wish they'd give us some new kind of enemy, besides more reskinned combines. maybe if we're lucky, this'n will have some sort of portable shield that goes down every once in a while and then you can get at the chewy combine center.

They're more like big white 'maggot-slugs' with trench coats. They're armed with flamethrowers if I remember RTB.

this is a great find.........
is aftermath coming out in the summer or fall?

I think you might be confusing them with another piece of concept art titled “alien combine soldier” that was dropped early.
In Raising the Bar it states that,

Ted Backman said:
This very early version of the combine soldier moved like a snake or a worm. Eventually it was decided to avoid any direct representation of human scale alien enemies and instead visually depict the Combine as a more transparent force.

That looks like the old style Combine soldiers from E3 2003, notice the blue gasmasks as seen in early hl2 pics shown here. They also have the same blue/black urban camo pattern.

Yes, you're correct. I just replayed the whole HL2 a few days ago, and yes... Damn am I forgetful.

The question still remains whether or not the entire City 17 citadel was completely destroyed, or if just those top areas were. My theory is that if the entire C17 Citadel was blown to shit, somehow during the course of Aftermath, you and Alyx hook up with other friendlies, just standard resistance members and important NPCs (Kleiner, Barney, etc.) in a nearby city, such as C16 or C18 perhaps, to lay low for a while.

However, if the entire citadel wasn't destroyed, then I would expect HUGE amounts of Combine resistance as you and Alyx try to escape the Citadel, because if the entire monument wasn't obliterated in the blast, there would be a shitload of Combine running around the Citadel, and don't forget all of those Synth machines we saw being manufactured.

Since we have been told that in the beginning of the small campaign we will be fleeing into the sewers with Alyx, my guess is that just before you hop down into the tunnels, you have a brief hook-up with someone like Barney with DOG who tells you to go to "blah blah place" so that you can all hook up later, when all of a sudden your conversation gets cut off or something.

My point is, if the citadel in C17 was blown to shit entirely, I wouldn't expect to see those Combine soldiers with orange eyes in C17, but rather in some other location, as I said, perhaps in another occupied city.

If not, I wouldn't doubt that we'd face this new breed while escaping from the Citadel.

The question still remains, though, how the hell Alyx and Gordon are supposed to have survived the explosion. Obviously, the G-Man did something. For all we know, we could wake up in some crazy, quiet, not blown to all hell area with Alyx, confused as to what the **** just haoppened to you. I <3 Valve.

In Aftermath, its been confirmed that the entire of the city and the citadel will be destroyed. The citadel is going into meltdown during the course of Aftermath, and your evacuating. I reckon that the explosion simply blew them back, ir just dispersed.

Question is, will there be a time limit? For example;
"TIME UNTIL EXPLOSION: 3 HOURS, 25 MINUTES, 57 SECONDS"

Definatly Not.
Doesn't Barney have that weird symbol on his suit? The skull one?

He's wearing a Metrocop uniform.

Ahhh. The combine elite have that symbol, just that its on their shoulders.

Maybe the "combine soldiers" have regained their senses back? The vortigaunts were once slaves of the Combine, now they're free to think and do as they like. Perhaps destroying the citadel destroyed the control the Combine have over the soldier metrocops/soldiers.
