Steam Backup Wizard Works!

Hey guys. I saw this on some other forums:

type "steam://backup/" (without the quotes) into your IE browser bar, and it'll open a steam backup utility. I haven't fully backed up something, but i've start to, and it seems like it works!

Oh yea, it allows you to specify whether or not to backup to a CD or DVD format, and approximates how many disks it will take. It also allows you to chose the directory to save the backup files to.

Hey...didn't they say somewhere that this wasn't supposed to be realeased yet? :D (well, it's still not implemented into the UI)

Cool, nice find

[pappa lazarou voice] Hello dave [/pappa lazarou voice]

Just remember guys, this may not be a final build of this feature. Someone on another forum told me that it "shreds" the files. I'm backing up Half Life 2 right now to see if it works. Just remember, since it hasn't been fully implemented, i wouldn't fully trust it yet ;)

Just got a BSOD because of this. Im on XP - I hate it when that happens, it makes out its mega serious

BSOD?

[edit]...OH blue screen of death. Yea, windows can do that sometimes ;) Does your computer often do that, or do you think that the backup utility did it?

Forget it about "shredding the files" guys. Someone else was just messing around :dozey:

Im on XP, Ive only ever BSOD'd on XP once before when my ati drivers were damaged.

Well i've just backed up hl2 and cs:s and it doesnt appear to do any damage *Grins at a shiny exe file that restores his files*

do you have to backup the files to your hard drive first then burn them?

How would that work with cd's?

'cause when I browse to my cd burner, it says that it's a read only drive, or there isn't enough space on the drive.

It creates the files, then you use an external program (such as Nero burning rom) to burn the files. Then, you run the .exe from the first disk and it should back them up. I haven't tested this, but the exe that the backup creates started up for me. I'm not going to backup / burn them until Half Life 2 is fully released.

yeah, I didn't see your picture before I posted.

I was afraid that it would just make 1 big file.

Thx though :)

Just finished backing up. It creates its own .exe to install the files and everything! All the files are perfect sizes for the disks too. Here is a screenshot of the folder it created:

Folder Pic (if it doesn't work, sorry...i have limited bandwith)

[edit] when you open the .exe, it opens a wizard to restore the files. Steam has to be closed to do this.

lol @ having limited bandwidth and then uploading a bmp file. convert it to jpeg dude!

nice pic tho, i think ill wait till i have all the hl2 files before i bother backing ne of it up

:E

LOL...maybe i should have done that :rolling: I wasn't thinking :D

Does this mean the Gabe may use something like the steam://backup/ to unlock the hl2 files (he will prompt a command through steam). It must be a possibility right?

I think the appropriate person should make this a sticky so everyone knows :)

Fliko: No they change actual code and unlock things from there..... For sake of explanation just think that VALVe has a big red button they press to release Half-Life 2...

Nice :) I'll wait for this feature to be in the menus first of all just so I know it won't screw up ;) and I'll wait for the files to be completely preloaded (read: playable) before I make any backups :)

I'm glad they decided to make an official one themselves. I'm sure they found it wise to allow us to do this easily, seeing the saved server traffic from people constantly redownloading it. but i'm going to wait until its alctually totally downloaded and activated before I back it up. Plus, I'll have to wait till xmas for a dvd burner.

Me too. Kinda feel sorry for THAT GUY who devoted his time to making his own backup/installer. ;(

You didn't find shit.....It's on the front page of www.halflife2.net scroll down to the doug lambardi post....

I certainly didn't know about it. So he was the 'first' person to inform me. THanks dude!

Anyways. I need to wait until the game is released before backing it up right? Cause it says for fully downloaded games only. I'm not sure if steam is fully downloaded! I might want to wait until they're not in encrypted form too.

Yea...except that didn't say HOW to do it. It just said that it was coming in the future. I posted instructions on how to run the backup wizard, and doug didn't.

Well, i backed mine up fully to test it, and it worked. But yes, it still is encrypted, and there may be a bit more that we need to download. Because of this, i'm not going to back it up until it's fully released.

Oh yea...does anyone know of any CD covers / designs? I've seen lots for DVD's, but not all of us are fortunate enough to have a DVD burner at this point ;)

Sure, but that isn't 1337

lol ;) I'm sure that they'll update it eventually. It's not even officially realeased at this point...
