I'm sure you guys are aware of the New Zealand earthquake.

I know we have at least one member in ChristChurch. Who is it again and can anyone help to verify if they're okay? I sure as hell hope they are,.. I hear it's awful there right now.

<crosses fingers>

I assume you mean morgs, he hasn't been on Steam for 2 days(according to friends on steam) now. Hopefully it's just no power/internet :(

yeah, Morgs is a Kiwi and I have been wondering where he is. If I remember correctly he lives in the Christchurch area. Gonna check.

EDIT ffs he is from Christchurch. He even made a thread about the quake there last year. Another hl2netter from the area is nofreeman. I really do hope they're both alright.

Oh jeez... I really hope they're alright. Fingers crossed.

Hope morgs is okay, sounds like things are pretty bad over there.

Damnit I wish places that are prone to earthquakes would be better prepared for these things... I don't know who I would even blame but it just pisses me off for people to suffer when there are ways to help prevent it...

To be fair to them apparently many of the buildings that collapsed were weakened in the quake 6 months ago and had not been reinforced yet. It just sucks how the last one happened at 4am so no one was in these buildings. This time it happened at lunchtime, then it got dark making it harder then it rained overnight. Would suck to be stuck in that rubble now.

Hope the members over there in Christchurch are doing okay.

Morgs hasn't been on since the 19th, but I wouldn't consider that to be anything significant since we all take breaks once in a while, save for the die-hard veterans.

I do really ****ing hope morgs and his family are okay. I mean, don't want anybody to be hurt or killed in these things, but of course more attachment to forum members.

nofreeman too. Hope they're alright! I guess nobody knows how to contact them and probably no way to contact them with infrastructure in ruins.

I hope Morgs is Okay, I have some acquaintances in Christchurch, and they are all fine.

Here's hoping that morgs was a bum living in a park somewhere, away from buildings.

Seventy-five are confirmed dead from this earthquake, and many more are missing. Let's hope that morgs and nofreeman are all right. If only they would go online to let us know how they're doing and what's going on over there. I'm going to keep thinking that they aren't contacting us because their power is out.

Hey guys,

Luckily me and my family were away for the quake, we got back earlier today and only just got power. The bad new is I have been on hospital with Mononucleosis and severe tonsillitis which is still very bad. Lucky compared to all the fatalities here though. We've lost a lot of buildings here and our tallest is expected to fall today and take more with it. Luckily our house is ok, but many of my family and friends places have been completely trashed/collapsed completely.

The city doesn't even look recognizable anymore, it looks like a warzone.

So glad you're alright morgs. Does nofreeman still post?

Best of luck to you with your mononucleosis and tonsillitis though bro! Who were you making out with? lol

You can get it up to 8 weeks before symptoms show apparently so i guess it could be any number of things. My tonsils have swelled but to almost block off my throat so I can't really eat, which is why I had to be in hospital to be on a drip. Now that I'm back it's going to be a struggle to keep hydrated when I can barely swallow anything.

Back on topic, this 'aftershock' is unbelievable. At least the first one was in the middle of the night, this one was right during lunch time. So many pedestrians were crushed including people at work.

One of the tallest buildings in Christchurch, The Grand Chancellor hotel, is on the brink of collapse following yesterday's devastating earthquake.

As another significant aftershock hits Christchurch, emergency services are being pulled back from the building for safety reasons.

The 26-storey hotel has slumped in one corner and there are fears it will fall. One floor inside has already collapsed.

In the last 10 minutes The Grand Chancellor hotel has moved about a metre horizontally and is now on a lean to the east.

Should the hotel come down, it will destroy other buildings in the central city.

Why don't they remove your tonsils? Do they not do tonsillectomies in New Zealand?

Hopefully other cities with the means in earthquake prone areas will actually take the initiative to spend the money and reinforce their buildings before the next earthquake levels them as well.

I think they only remove your tonsils if you keep getting it because they can be good for catching and filtering bad bacteria.

Thanks everyone for all the concern.

Glad to hear you're okay. You guys really can't catch a break. :(

Unbelievable that it was felt as far as Wellington... not even on the same island!

I felt it in Greymouth too, just as I was going into the hospital and had a bad feeling it was in CHCH.

Isn't KA from New Zealand? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yes, but he's pretty far away up in Auckland.

Really glad to hear from you morgs, even if you're not fit and healthy! I assume they have evacuated the whole area around the leaning hotel? Also are the aftershocks still continuing?

Oh of course Morgs gets Mono and misses an earthquake...

Well at least you and your family are all right. Is your home good too? I assume since you were awaiting power that your home is at least functional enough to need power...

My brother was up in Abel Tasman, didn't even know it happened until he got into a town last night.

Glad to hear all our resident kiwis are safe!

****ing terrible news, Christchurch has had it pretty bad - the first quake was awful in terms of destruction, but no one died, it was a bit of a miracle. This time, it's 75 confirmed fatalities and 300 missing... Absolutely awful, it's like the city has been bombed. My father's down there for work, but managed to avoid most of the chaos and is driving down country in order to fly back to the north island.

Glad to hear your dad is ok KA.

My brother/sisters houses are both still without power and water, I think my parents house may be ok because we're on top of an old river bed. Pretty mcuh nowhere is open, people have been asked to stay home and the whole CBD has been cleared. The city has very much shut down.

I was back on an IV line in the busy after hours last night and was re-diagnosed with glandular fever and tonsillitis, which the docs gave me some good stuff for and I'm feeling slightly better.

The effects of the quake haven't quite hit me yet, it's just crazy to think there are people gone because of this is my city.

There are aftershocks happening all the time.

Just continue to be careful. You have to be extra careful of the criminal human element after disasters like this which have caused so much chaos.

NZ has mostly Asian immigrants,so there's not to much to worry about :p

I'm glad Morgs is still with us, but is sucks about being sick.

I can't imagine the full significance of this tragedy. I wish the rescue efforts the best fortune.
I hear there are rescue crews from all over the world are on their way to help out. Its nice to know that there are people and groups dedicated to this kind of service.

Yeah we've got rescue teams from all over asia, Canada, Australia, The UK, USA and more, it's awesome how much help we're getting.

What does 'unozero' even mean? One zero?

Is it just me, or is that quite a lot of earthquakes to happen over four days?
