Newbie - installation probs, sorry!

Just bought half life 2 holiday 2006 pack. Have a dial up internet so want to spen as little time online as poss as its slow and I have to pay per minute.

Steam installed and updated. I then put in the product key and the games populated in my games list - but are not installed.

I can not get them to install from the dvd. Steam keeps telling me the games will download via the internet which will take 500 hours or something - obviously ridiculous. Just about ready to flip :sniper:

How can I get the dvd to do the install?

Seems people all over the world are having problems installing an undoubtedly brilliant game. Think Valve really dropped the ball with this one. Would have been really nice to get more in the box than a double sided card which simply says insert the dvd...

Dont mean to moan. Any help gratefully received.

Well if you close Steam and run the autorun.exe file in the DVD it should give you the option of installing the game.
Either your still stuck since it will probley take you 500 hours to download all of the updates for each game before you can play them.

Indeed, as said above. Obviously the game will eventually run through steam, but the installation of the .gcfs (game content files) on your DVD need to go into their correct directories first. Once in there, Steam should recognise them. Assuming you have a working DVD drive, put the disc in and get the files installed into the C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\steamapps directory.

Thanks for your help.

The dvd files are .sis, .sim and .sid files and setup.exe.

Unfortunately I still cant seem to get anywhere. Any further ideas gratefully received.

What Happens when you run setup.exe also did you download Steam or let it install from DVD

You are much better off installing steam from the DVD I would think.

Out of curiosity where do you live? Pay per minute Dialup seems really harsh in todays world of high speed internet.
