Hello,
I started to play HL2 few days ago, and now halfway through the game (Follow Freeman), I understand all the objectives and stuff I'm doing but I still don't get what are we actually try to accomplish. To save Dr Eli and get out of the city? Why did the Prof want to teleport me to Eli(and failed. Horribly)?

And can someone explain to me why is Gordon Freeman is so famous like everytime people see him they'll be like "OMG IT REALLY YOU GORDon FREeman what an honour".

Did you play HL1?

Okay I think get it now. He defeated the Nihilanth. But why people seems so depending on him, and be like "Run for yo life Gordon I'll take care of the this". People know he defeated the leader and stuff but so far this game isn't about the xen aliens anymore and people treat him like Harry Potter. You know, the one who destined to end the whatever happening in the game. But they didn't know, right?

I'm not up on the official canon (I'm sure somebody will step in this thread eventually) But here's how I see it: Gordon Freeman was a key player and the hero of the human race when the Xen invasion occurred. The Combine invasion took place after that, and was obviously related, so the only hero icon the people could identify was Gordon, as stories of his actions and who he was spread. If there was another person that was more heroic than Gordon when the Combine invasion began, they might be following him instead. But Gordon happened to be the best candidate. "If he helped us against Xen, he can help us against this"

I see. That clear up some things for me. And another rather silly question, why are the Combines after him? We know the military were also after him in the first game, and it is because they thought he started the Resonance Cascade thingy(correct me if I'm wrong), and now Black Mesa is destroyed, what's up with Combines?

The Combine weren't specifically hunting for Gordon until after he reached Dr. Kleiner's lab. Before this they weren't aware of who he was. During the failed teleportation Gordon "flashed" momentarily into Dr. Breen's office. Breen knew Freeman from Black Mesa, that he was dangerous, and rightfully saw him as a credible threat since he single-handedly closed the dimensional rift between Earth and the border world (Xen).

In HL1 the military was sent to Black Mesa to clean up the operation and kill any scientists involved/employed there. Gordon would have been included in this but was more particularly hunted down since he was at ground zero when the Resonance Cascade happened. Also, his reputation as a killer quickly spread among the HECU units and every soldier soon wanted to see him dead.

Good. Oh no it's fine, a silly question can sound silly but may actually be a good one. Them Combines are after him because he's Gordon Freeman and it's a video game. Yeah the military were after him in the first game because he caused that whole Resonance Cascade scenario (which really wasn't his fault, stupid G-Man made them use the crystal and he merely pushed it into the hole(that's what she said lol)). Black Mesa was destroyed, yes. Remember when he teleported into Breen's office? Breen recognized him from Black Mesa and then he sends the Combines after him.

Dragonspark new member MVP. Great question, it really does start to seem overboard how much people admonish you in HL2 (I can't quite figure out how Gordon became a world hero yet). If anyone actually has information we don't, that'd be awesome.

Was what I postulated incorrect? If you know something I don't, please do tell.

Nope. There's a little more to it than that, but it was a decent summary.

Well that's nice because I know there are a few people here who know 100x more than me about this stuff, and like BHC said it would be nice for them to explain in full. They're running late aren't they? Do they still even visit the site? Who are they, anyway?

Edit: Wait! Riomhaire is one of them, I think. Riom get in here!

Yeah I was just wondering if there was additional information out there - wasn't discrediting what you said, it was quite informative.

I believe the G-Man sold Gordon to the humans, eyah?

Also, as to the overarching macguffin, you'll figure it out. Just remember who your employer is. Do bosses always tell people what they need to know? Nah. But they do expect things to get done.

It's implied the Resistance hired the G-Man. I conjecture that what their overall goals were was never exactly laid out. It's pretty clear that the R and the G are in fairly constant contact with each other through HL2. All the while, they never exclaim exactly what the hell Gordon is there to do, they just are always glad to see him there for his "help", pointedly ambiguous. My take on that is, the humans were desperate and had the vortigaunts reach out to the G-Man for his assistance. Thereupon, the G-Man is like, I'm dealing with retards here, but they have "something" of value, so I'll make a deal. The nature of said price, to this day, has never been spoken of. He says, yeah, I'll help, you can have Gordon, and the leaders of the R, the scientists from Black Mesa, who only know that Gordon slaughtered his way through the center of Hell, ****ing bitchslapped his way through HECU, and stepped through a portal into the Beyond, never to be seen again, saving the universe martyr style, is somehow ****ing working for the Great Necktie ****all that the V's have been chanting about incessantly. Their minds are blown. They start yapping their heads off to the rest of the R, but they still aren't really sure what "help" means. That's left up to the G to decide. And you, mister, work for the ****in G. Which is why Ep. 2 is ALL KINDS of ****ed up to those in the know. You are running from THAT thing. Whatever the **** he is. Seriously, **** that guy. Straightening his tie in the window. What a jackass.

Okay, so apparently, Breen asked them to kill Freeman, but why? What is he going to lose if he just let Freeman live, besides, he's the Administrator of Earth, he's human, I don't understand why he's against the rebels who try to set the Earth free(i think that's the point of the game), why would he rather be enslaved?

So many things about the game is bugging me and I won't even bother to go deep about the employment thingy with G-Man.

I hope I don't annoy you with these questions :shy: I keep wondering what's going on around in the game so much.

Breen is the primary antagonist of the game primarily because he was in a position to communicate with the Combine during the Seven Hour War and put a halt to it, the terms being the subjugation of mankind. Those terms being accepted, humanity is being brought into the fold slower than it otherwise would have been, e.g., being wiped out. The Resistance isn't about that jazz. They are actively "resisting" the Combine.

That being said, he freaks the **** out when he sees Gordon because he knows who Gordon is. Breen was also the Administrator of Black Mesa, a fine detail that was never truly expounded upon as much as it probably should have been. Moreso than knowing exactly who Gordon is and what he is capable of, he knows what it means for Gordon to be here at all, that being, the involvement of 'outside interested parties'. That being said, his death would do more than anything to put a stop to the will of the Resistance.

And there is no confusion about the details of your employment. You work for the G-Man. Period spacebar. You said you played HL1. You had a choice. You took it, contract signed, full stop.

By the way I just beat the game :joyful:
Still clueless what's up with Breen though, but anyway, thanks for clearing some things up for me.

Looking forward to Episode One :joyful:
