Ive got version 1.1 installed and FRAPS is showing a constant 30fps in game and 200+ when in menus. I read somewhere the 1.1 patch locks the FPS to 30 even when vsync is off... how can I unlock it?

Does it degrade your playing experience?
If no, deal with it.
If yes, go to the game's support website and/or uninstall patch 1.1.

bloody hell i was just asking!! What the point having a blazing fast PC when you can only play at 30fps??

:P
It's okay. Uhm... Well, does the website you looked on give a reason? Maybe the game gets a bit unstable at high FPS'? Hm?

FRAPS is showing a constant 30fps

I don't understand, are you saying you noticed the 30fps cap either by yourself, or did a 3rd party app tell you this, so you automatically think its a bad thing

DEATH eVADER, when im in the menus FRAPS shows 200+ FPS and in game sticks to 30FPS.... surley that means the game is locking the FPS

Yes, it is locking it. I looked around, most car games have this same thing. Juiced 2, and some others, plus Carbon. It just makes the game run smoother, perhaps at higher speeds. It really shouldn't effect gameplay.

I'm not sure, but...

If you were running at 60 fps, then suddenly a slowdown to 30 happened, you would notice it. If it's fixed at 30 fps, you will never notice any slowdown unless the framerate got lower than 30. Of course with that pc you have there, I think it would never get below 60. <3 8800gt :D

yeah ur right, oh well still it loks great and runs smooth cant complain... its an ok game actually, the demo didnt do it justice and using a 360 controller helps alot too

Why developers can't just optimize the game enough so it can run at 60 WITHOUT slowdown, then we wouldn't have a problem.
And yes, I'm sure it can be done. Capping it at 30 is a waste of a PC for people like us who should be able to run it smoother.

There should be an option allowing you to choose if you want it capped or not.

NFS: PS is for some reason, quite graphically demanding. I upgraded my e6300 to an e6750 just to play it with the gfx turned up.

I am getting some pretty intense artifacting in this game. Anyone else having pixels and polygons flying all over the place or is the patch supposed to cure this?

Just a different perspective but a game with erratic frame rate (e.i. 40-80) would bug me more than something with a lower but constant playable frame rate (30 in this case). Pump up the details!

ive noticed sometome when making a sharp turn the 'world' stutters around whilst the cars move smoothly, think its a bad port since the FPS is always at 30

This is why you need to keep the racing games on consoles and the shooters on PC.

_Z_Ryuken -thats pretty crazy there.

EDIT- my 1000 post

...what is your video card? I can also feel it's not overclocked, so I don't know what to do yet.

There's a few reasons to lock a frame rate

1) Due to the way they designed their physics engine, it needs to "step" at regular intervals or you can experience funky behavior. In a racing game, you don't want this.

2) To prevent V-Sync issues. If it happens once, chances are the problem will continue until your machine can finish a game loop faster than the others and get the next frame ready _before_ the monitor is ready to refresh (ie, during it's V-Blank). If they have it locked at 30 FPS, that means each frame has roughly 33ms to get ready. If it was running at 60 FPS, each frame has 16ms to get ready.

This is probably just a cause of console-itis affecting PC games. Usually on a console, VSync is a big no-no (it can really screw things up, and can also affect online syncing), but usually on PC they just leave it up to each machine to handle itself... Looks like EA didn't want to rewrite part of their physics engine to be more robust. Since it's EA, it doesn't surprise me.

You won't really notice a difference though (subtle smoothness at best) between 30 and 60.

*Edit* _Z_Ryuken: Either your computer can't get enough air (clean the dust as it's probably heating the GPU up), or your GPU is going to fail "soon". If cleaning the inside of your case doesn't help the issue, I would start looking into getting a new GPU. Granted you may not need one for a few more months (or if your card is really bad off, it could be days).

*Edit 2* Oh, and also update your drivers. :)

Iced that's exactly what I have problem with. The fact that EA took the easy option and capped the FPS instead of actually optimising their game slightly for the PC market.

It's not good games that are killing the PC market, it's shitty ports.

Uh, actually, there's a pretty big difference. I downloaded the demo today out of boredom. My first though, after "god, these controls are terrible" was "this game would feel a lot better if it was running at a higher framerate." This is a racing game, and the sensation of speed is completely killed by not running at a fast clip.

Probably.

I probably should have said most people wouldn't notice.

I'm not defending EA, just sort of justifying why it happens.

I agree with you though dekstar, I think EA should have let it go uncapped (or at least cap it at 60) rather than have it go at 30, which is probably what the console version is capped at as well. It's more work, and EA just probably wasn't willing to have the game take longer than what their schedule said it should.

I download the demo today to test it too. Well, is it really capped for you? Are you sure? The demo is not capped for me. Framerate is at the upper right corner.

1024x768 is the max resolution for my crappy monitor :P

Thats usually a sign of an overheating or dying video card. Clean out your pc with some compressed air and try turning the graphics down. If it still happens, then start saving up.

Trust me, my PC is getting plenty cool air and has very little dust. ATi's drivers haven't been up to spec as of late, however. I think if anything is overheating, it is my PSU because my comp shuts down randomly, though rarely.

I'm also betting NFS: PS will adjust it's framerate depending on your hardware.

You can flash your BIOS with a USB pen on most new motherboards.
Brick told me.

Are you running at highest settings? What hardware? I'm almost positive that the framerate was capped for me.

Highest settings, Vsynch off, 8800gt + 2gb ram + e6850 3ghz

WHOEVER THINKS THE CAP IS A GOOD THING IS AN IDIOT.

I just bought a brand new video card. Radeon 4870... ran the NFS PRO STREET i get 50++++ frames persecond... no glitches. no hangs.MAX everyething.
SO then i download the patch hoping that it improves gameplay even further.........

... u would laugh if you saw the amount of GPU usage my graphics card is using now at 30 FPS lock.

hahah its hilarious. i only have 15 percent graphics card useage... ehm (UPDATE you can now look at your graphics card usage with percenton newer vid cards)

SOMETIMES the game goes down to zeros percent graphics card useage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and i am still getting 30 frames persecond.

I hate EA. this was no optimization. my game was more enjoyable at 50++ frames persecond...

I still play NFSU2 for its silky smooth gameplay. This game looks like crap compared to NFSU2..
i might as well throw away my high quality high refresh rate monitor.......

NFSU2 plays at 70 + FPS all the time.

NFSMW... crap... it glitches. even on console..
NFSCARBON... better than NFSMW(glitchwize)... but we are back to night racing which was done before.
NFSPROSTREET... locked framerate... die ea die....

NFS U2 and NFS hot pursuit.... are the best so far for pc.
back in the days they used to make pc games not console ports.

haahah hey i buy old games so i can run them at max and enjoy it perfectly hahah... i just realized this thread was old!

I'm so happy campcreekdude resurrected this thread to tell us all how impressive his computer is. Just the other day I was wondering how impressive campcreekdude's computer was, and now my prayers have been answered. I can now sleep.

i am actually working on a cure which isnt much of one...

I am gonna use the 1.0 no cd patch with 1.1 patch installed.

maybe that will unlock the FPS.... (it probably wont)

Its taking forever for me to download that NO CD patch on Dial-up!

i cant figure out how to uninstall that 1.1 patch without uninstalling the entire game.

Grid is probably a little better but just as crapy as DIRT. i hated dirt. crappy port.
i can run the game smoothly(DIRT) but because DIRT is such a CPU HOG... and i can only get 25-30 FPS... the game is definitly bottlenecked by my slow CPU.

i havent tried the GRID DEMO.. but i cant expect much from anything baised on DIRT.

GTR1 was the best newish game for RACEING on pc i have seen in a long time. i owned it for a little while but i just couldnt get myself into the crazy simulation.(i dont have the time)

i bet GTR2 is even better.
SOMEONE should just take the GTR2 engine and make it for arcarde racing fun.
if i had time i would actually play GTR2 demo or buy it at a store. but it takes too much time to get into...

i have noticed this most racing simulators actually are designed for pc
and arcade racing games for console....

anywayz that was wayyy off topic...

SO I DID run the NOCD patch 1.0 on the 1.1 patch.. it said before entering the game... error your trying to run a file that is not for the version you are currently running.
but the game ran normally after i click OKAY. and no frames persecond LOCK.

however i forgot to benchmark the difference between 1.0 no cd and no patch versus
1.1 patch with 1.0 no cd...

I can do that now... since i uninstalled the game and re-installed it.
