After doing a bit of research on DS consoles (not much) I'm contemplating whether or not to go for it, money is not a problem in this case.

I like the style of games on the DS, namely Pixel graphic RPG's etc...

Should I look into the DS Lite or the DS DSi? Which is much more expensive.

I just traded mine in, and to me the PSP has so much more in common with what I like. I can turn the power button off and the game will be right there where I left it. It stores music, movies, and even books on there (gotta use 'Jpegbook' and www.gutenberg.org) and its much more pleasing to the eyes. My only gripe is the lack of games but really the PSP has a lot of uses.

The DS is the console of choice for jrpg fans - particularly those who favour the old school pixel games. There are plenty of other good games too, but more jpgs than you could want.

This is what has me interested. I *far* prefer games with pixely/almost PS1 graphics for rpgs and games like yoshi and mario than the elite graphics of video games on newer consoles today, although that sounds weird.

Now to decide between lite and DSi...DSi doesn't have THAT much more going for it for the price increase.

EDIT: http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/Nintendo-DS/Operation-Vietnam/1547595/ The graphics of this game are awesome to me, compared to say the graphics of a modern day shooter on PS3 or 360.

I'm hoping to get a DSi soon. If you're alright with the former version then by all means.

Ed: well I just learned that it doesn't play GBA games (doesn't have that slot anymore)...I think I might have to consider the lite now too.

For just gaming I think the Lite is a better option, I don't need all the extras that come wtih the DSi (camera, file computer transfers etc)

Edit: then again, the lite is out of stock on the site I buy from for a few weeks which makes me very tempted to get the DSi...

Wow ds lites going for like $60, many of them not just one.

I'm still utterly underwhelmed by the DSi's feature-set. I'm not convinced I'd pay an extra £10 for that stuff, £50 extra is just comical. And then there's the loss of GBA compability, and I've clocked up many hours on quality GBA games through the DS...

And yes, this is before you consider flash-cart compatibility. When it comes down to it, the DSi exists because Nintendo wanted an easy way to stop people from pirating their software, not because of the handful of crap they'll release that actually supports the multimedia features that you've got in a better, equally portable form on every mobile phone you've owned for the last half-decade. You can't blame them for protecting their intellectual property (except, you know, the fact that they've been excreting gold bullion ever since the DS-Lite was first released), but you're effectively paying £50-extra for updateable DRM firmware, and perhaps the ability to be the kid with the newest gear for half a week. And only if you're still at the age that having a new DS is actually in some way a marker of credibility, as opposed to being of the age where having one generally gets you judged as childish, unless you're using it to play brain-training or something.

DS-Lite > Syphallis > DSi.

Also the DSi is said to not be able to run the majority of flash card GBA stuff either, apparently some of the GBA hardware rendering hardware is gone.

Some of the best games on the DS are GBA games (FF6 is my favourite jrpg bar none and the snes Mario remakes are essential) - you have to weigh up whether you prefer a camera and bigger screen to being able to play these titles on the move.

I've decided to go for a DS Lite, not only because it's cheaper but the ability to play GBA games increases the possibilities hugely. I presume I'll also have to buy a separate charger if I don't get a bundle.

Am I the only one here with just the first DS? I would get a DS lite, but I don't see the point, since my old DS works fine.

DSi has two cameras, bigger screens, better processor, and (here's the kicker) it uses the same battery as the DS lite. I'm pretty sure the battery life probably sucks on the DSi.

I enjoy the DS. It's got quite a few very fun games. Then again, I enjoy the PSP also......*Pulls hair out*

Whut? The DS has a built in battery. Were you expecting double-As in that tiny thing?

"And don't forget the Light Magnifier!"

And respect to anyone with a first-generation DS. You were there before it was cool, man. I do wonder if making the DS's first-edition as ugly as it is was a concious business decision though.

Maybe you should get one if you are in those japanese RPG's and stuff.

I have one too. When I just got it(with a flashcard=all games I want) I found it the best console I evar had, and played on it non-stop. But after a month it got a bit boring(finished all interesting games), and actually I hardly ever use it anymore. This shouldn't be a problem if you want it just for these RPG games, as there is a whole load of them available.

My most advanced handheld is still my GBA SP.

Paying a ton of extra money for DSiWare and a couple of extra hardware features seems ridiculous to me. I do kind of want a DS but from the looks of it I'll get a lite (once it's EVEN CHEAPER muahaha).

The reason I bought my DS was because its great for connecting with other DS's. My friends and I all use them on the bus when we're traveling for Crew. The wifi works everywhere and there's only lag when someone quits the game. I don't really know how the wifi works in the DS, but I wish the itouch's wifi could connect to other itouches like this.

I'm really looking forwards to the Scribblenauts game that was posted here a while ago. It should be endless hours of amazing fun.

Broken Sword is also very awesome on the DS.

I play my son's or wife's DS occasionally. Are there any must have titles that'll appeal to me: an adult gamer? most of my son's games get a little boring (or frustrating) after 10 mins of play

My friend wants a DS and we were talking about it and came to the conclusion that a basic DS is probably far cheaper, if you can mind the fact that it looks like a brick.

Comes with a charger.

Releasing without a charger would be... well, there would be riots in the street, is what I think.

The DS Lite is awesome, and I highly recommend it. I use it on the plane a lot, and it makes the time fly.

Plus, portable Peggle... Ahhhhh!

Though, in all honesty, if you can hold back, wait until E3 and see about the handheld announcements there.

Personally, I'm hoping that nintendo reveals Super Smash Bros. on the DS at E3 this year.

The DS is probably one the the best, if not THE best portable system.

Some games worth picking up are:

GTA: Chinatown Wars
The World Ends With You (Especially if you like sprite based JRPGS!)
Zelda Phantom Hourglass
Super Mario 64 DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Kart DS
Animal Crossing: wild Worlds
Final Fantasy IV Remake
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Advance Wars: Day of Ruin
Dementium: The Ward
All the Castlevania games
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
Final Fantasy Tactics: A2
Pokemon: Platnum (I had to add it:p)
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Yoshi's Island DS
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Trauma Center: Under The Knife
Trauma Center: Under The Knife 2
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword

I have a DS original and two DS Lites (the first Lite is worn out).

I'm very faithful to Nintendo, especially their hand-held systems. Their RPGs are the best, in my opinion.

I've been told if you have a PSP, (or even a modern cell phone) then forget about the DSi and just get a DS.
I'd get a DS for Advance Wars alone personally. Love that game.

Mine got stolen during college a couple years ago and I haven't had one since.
I miss Advance Wars. :(
