Or at least Greenpeace says they do.

Greenpeace posted the latest edition of its "Guide to Greener Electronics" yesterday, which ranks the top 18 consumer electronics companies by their policies towards toxic chemicals and recycling, and it looks like the rankings have shifted slightly since last time -- Sony Ericsson and Samsung have tied for the lead with a 7.7 out of 10 rating (taking over from Nokia, which fell to number 9 with a 6.7) and Sony is sitting pretty at number 3 with a 7.2. Apple, which has taken some lumps in the past few months, is right in the middle of the pack with a 6, but most surprising is Nintendo, which came in absolutely dead last with a big ol' 0 -- looks like Mario wasted a little too much water in Sunshine, eh?

Do I even have to mention how much of a crock of shit these ratings are? Greenpeace gave Nintendo that rating purely based on the lack of info Nintendo has provided.

EDIT: Title inspired by Kotaku's title for their article. Give credit where credit is due, right?

If Nintendo haven't supplied the information then its quite possible that they have no such policies for dealing with these problems, and for once I applaud Greenpeace for highlighting it in this manner.

I wonder though how their vessels would rate on such a scale? I'm betting very poorly.

Nintendo may or may not be an eco-friendly company, but they have NO obligation to forward any info to Greenpeace's bullsh*t ratings system. :|

What could they possibly have done to be green, make wii's out of recylced plastic?

They get 3 year old orphans to make them out of used dentures.

No one said they did, but regardless, that's not really the point - as 'going green' becomes an economic imperative, companies with green credentials will get better PR, so it's in Nintendo's interests to provide information. Anything's better than zero, right?

I love these types of threads ..you know, the ones where everyone shoots the messenger and ignores the message

I really dont care if it's nintendo or if it were haliburton, just because they're a video game company doesnt mean I withhold judgement and blindly support them

Shareholders (if its a public company, I'm not knowledgeable on their structure) or investors would very likely disagree.

Public relations is very important to businesses. They would ignore bad press at their peril.

Well I'm certainly not blindly supporting Nintendo, but Greenpeace is being completely unfair by basing Nintendo's grade off of the fact that they have no info. They should have left Nintendo off of the list and noted why. Yes, they have the facts supplied farther down, but people tend to look for bullet points (ie the picture) and not for the details.

Nintendo will surely get bad press from this and eventually have to supply some sort of info, but this is hardly going to hurt their sales. Mommy and Daddy don't give a shit if little Timmy's Wii is made out of the bones of endangered animals and deadly chemicals so long as it makes him happy on Christmas.

They're trying to kill Ecco the Dolphin. They still grudge him for the 1992 fiscal period. Good year for Sega, 1992.

you cant blame greenpeace for people's laziness

but the details are the picture: they have no policies in place to address any of the criteria set forth by Greenpeace therefore they rate an understandable 0/10

it doesnt matter, corporations should be held accountable to the mess they produce

Agreed.

Greenpeace has a pretty poor track record for this kind of stuff.

Nintendo, on the other hand, made my childhood.

**** the planet, if it's pussy ass can't handle a few billion people, it deserves to be completely destroyed, and us along with it

I remember renting that game a couple times. Damn Nintendo, damn them for killing my Ecco!

Nintendo has focused all of their humanity saving efforts into leaving Earth. See: Super Mario Galaxy.

That scale is utter bull. Merely from the fact they've put two limits on the scale, as if anyone could actually be perfectly green, or anyone could be perfectly um... not-green.

In 50 years time when everyone's using Fusion power and Solar/Wind power, they'll stick complain at them for using too much Tin in their electronics, or something stupid.

Batshit loco eco-warrior cult poopoo's on a game and console company.

Ooooooooooooooooo Nintendo are so BURNED!.

:imu:

Actually, my reaction was a.

My personal opinion of Greenpeace has gone down recently, not from this incident in particular, but from the almost commercialisation that seems to be happening within it. There are far more people in suits and ties and politicians. I would have been a lot more likely to have listened to them several years ago, when you'd get the wackos hijacking submarines, because they believed in it. The guys I've listened to from Greenpeace more recently, since Global Warming became a more political issue, all seem to twist things and manipulate people, and I just lose interest. While I think that Nintendo should get their act together and/or actually pay more attention to the environment, I also think Greenpeace have gone the wrong way in attempting to scale the companies like they did.
